Default Help for new players in Thelanis

My name is Traster. I'm going to give a try to Gornn's initiative in Khyber (Khyber: NPI (New player Initiative) and do something similar in Thelanis. I will try to be everyday (Monday to Friday) from 6:30pm to 7:00pm EDT doing my special halfling dancing in top of the Marketplace entrance fountain with a LFM up. If you need some help I can give you some pots or advice for your journey. I'm not rich, so the pots will be limited unless I receive donations from kind adventurers. Be sure to cheer me up. Stoneskin is welcomed to make me look like a living statue. Waterbreathing bubble would help to a psychedelic look.

Any suggestions will be welcomed. If I like this, I could extend the time. Volunteers wanted!

I'm in marketplace, waiting for you. I'm donating 500 potions for your cause.

As i said in the other thread, when you know you are going to be on, send me a pm and we can set up a time to meet and i will make a contribution to the cause. While i dont play often on Thelanis, with the upcoming expected surge, i think this is something important to do.

i see it work wonders every day on Khyber and know it can do the same on every server. Good luck and let me know.

    Good work Traster!

Everytime my pack gets full I head to the Harbor and hand out the gear to new people. Sadly, I don't have the gold to do much else.

I figure it's little things like this that will help bring in and keep new players.

This is great. I think you'll find this VERY rewarding! Now that you've put this message out there I think you'll find many people willing to help.

Usually I give out to each player 100 CLW pots, 50 CMW, 10 Lesser Resto, 5 Remove Curse, 5 Remove Blindess and maybe 500 plat. I also have wands on hand if it's a cleric or class that can use them.

You'll find that you also get a lot of questions. Some players won't even want the pots they may just have a question or two about the game. That surprised me a lot, actually.

I'm glad you're picking up on this! You're going to see a HUGE influx of new players. This is going to make a big difference in their intro experience.

Mythe, the original newbie helper on Khyber, who's been doing this for 3 years (she's amazing by the way. She's singhandedly done more for my server than anyone I know) said the first 15 minutes in the harbour is critical. If people get confused or overwhelmed it's problematic. So getting to players then is key.

Iscifi, consider selling like 5 of those Major Mnemonics and giving Traster either the plat proceeds or stacks of CLW, CMW, Lesser Resto, Curse etc...

Seriously, one major Mnemonic can literally buy like 2000 CLW pots. That goes a long way.

Awesome. I'll help out with some plat, and possibly some gear, if I can find any old stuff gathering dust.

This is so cool. It's good to finally see everything spread.

Another thing to consider. Maintain your help channel. I know Thelanis has one but it is seldom staffed. Try and get those interested in answering a few questions to monitor channel. They don't have to answer every question that is posed. Just once in a while but if 20 people are answering once in a while that's a lot of questions getting answered.

The second thing to do when handing out the donations etc inform the new player how to join the help channel and give them a hand. It's been my experience that those who ask a lot of questions in help channel stick around a few months later to answer questions for the next group of new players.

The new /advice channel coming is for area only. For example /advice in harbor is different that /advice in marketplace. For this reason the custom help channels are still more useful and powerful. About the only thing I will be using the advice channel for is to direct users to the help channel.

Good luck in your venture. I hope your server rallies behind you otherwise it's a very expensive job. I was broke constantly for the first year and a half. Then after the server merge Qwijy approached me and started helping to fund the initiative and it just took off from there. Hopefully you will find some good and regular donators as well. Loriche can always be counted on for equipment/pots/gear whatever you need. For years he has done whatever he can to help out.

    Best of luck.

If I'm not too busy tonight I'll come and give you some donations for the cause. For your bubble head though, get it from House P cause it will last the whole 30 minutes

The problem with the help channel thus far seems to be the lack of participation from the new players. I am not sure if they understand how to use it or if they are even aware of it all. What I do know is that I am online fairly often throughout the day and have seen a question come across once and before I could respond, Mrcow was on the job /Cheers. Somebody needs to get the word out to these peeps about the channel.

The idea that the op spoke of will help this tremendously, couple that with telling them about the help channel at same time and it will pick up.

They are not aware of it. That's why those who are handing things out need to tell them about it.

There are other things to do to let them know. For example if you see a question being asked in general chat, answer it then tell the player about the help channel.

Or when my helper character logs in I put a message in my WHO panel comment. I know we don't read the WHO comments but new players do often take a quick look through. The message I use is as follows:

/joinchannel help /1 MESSAGE to ask a question

A few times a week it grabs a couple new players so it works.

Also if you are not using your BIO put the above message in it.

None of these ideas are the best put collectively used they help spread the word about the channel to new players. I've seen it work on Khyber.

Hopefully, it will be easier with the advice channel they are adding when Mod9 comes live.

It has been a great experience helping new players in Thelanis. I want to thank many players who donated for the cause. Many of them have posted in this thread. Unfortunately, law school starts today and I will only be able to play on weekends. I may bring up the "Free Potions for New Players" lfm on some weekends, but I don't promise anything. After August I'm not sure I will be able to continue playing until the end of the semester (Yes, Mod9 delay hurt me really bad).

I know there are some efforts in trying to come up with guilds to help and train newbies. I thank you for your efforts. After all, it will benefit our overall gaming experience in the server.

Sorry. Been on my high levels to save up money for newbies. So, I already do this, but it is nice someone else is doing it too.

    Default cleric help

I know in my spare time I try to find new clerics and help them out with low level mithral shields, armor, wands, etc. The reason I stick with clerics is because all I play are clerics. If you have any new clerics that come your way, please send them my way and I will be happy to outfit them, give them some essential equipment, and try and explain devotion, potency, etc. I'm not trying to horn in on you, just remember how I was when I started and like helping the future healers of Thelanis.
