Name w/~Servername

I opened an old account and several of my characters have names with ~<servername>. as I understand it, these are names that resulted from a server merge. I now have access to 32 point builds which didn't exist in the past. But, because these names were created when DDO was new there very unique names that may not be available. Basically, I'm wondering if I delete these characters, make a new character and try to use the name (sans~<servername> suffix), will the names still be available?

Only if whomever created the initial name, that took precedence over yours, deleted theirs and no one else took it. So, in short, probably not.

You can check this, though, because I "think" (could be wrong) you get a free rename with those ~1 names. If this is the case, see if your original name is available.

You mean you would write the ~servername in your name back again? If so, that is not possible since the "~" and many more signs are forbidden in names. Only turbine's automatic naming system can use them.

Also I'm pretty sure the name length is limited too, which again can only be bypassed with the automatic renames you ecnountered.

it's possible... assuming you have 10 toons? if not, you can of course practice by rerolling the toon names you want...

Another option is to hook yourself up with a trial account and then, see if you can create the toons you want.

A third option is to take advantage of the Turbine premium renaming services... not to rename mind you but to test the waters... probably an option there to see if the target name is there BEFORE you're pressed into actually buying.

A fourth option is to ask players to try names for you - of course they also can't have a 10 toons

A fifth option is - and this is probably not so hot - to try and create a toon on the beta servers... not so hot since the pool of names there came from all the servers but, if your name is unique enough... maybe... that of course is not to say that since the characters were ported there that someone didn't roll a toon with your chosen name since i think Dec 2008 but, maybe worth a shot... maybe Anyway, you'll have the option to add buy new character slots if you're hard pressed to delete any of yours first - and you're given a numver of free point to spend on the new slot so should be a free deal.

mail something to the name you want and if the mail goes though, you'll know for sure the name is taken !!

...and if it comes back in a month, it's taken and sitting idle.

Also, that "~" is actually a dash.
Use your free rename "/changename <newname>", and if the name is taken, you'll get a fail message and be prompted to try another name.

Good options Zaal, but there's a much better option, a lot more simple and a lot less trouble and here what it is:

Use the Friends List, add to your friends list the names you like, and try different patterns and each time you'll automatically know if someone have the name. If you enter a name, and the only thing you can see is the name, and no informations, that's a player who havn't logged that character for a long while, if you see the lvls/class/guild information, it's someone who had been active in like, the year at least.

Once you figured what name you want, you then can use the /changename token that you have because you lost your name during the server merge.
