Very well said. Thats what I felt got lost as well, when you start defining everything you start boxing in your imagination with it. With us it was all about the role playing and fun. The dice was just there to determine the outcome of the battles we are already seeing in our head.

You know, 4E isn't an abomination.

What it also isn't is Dungeons and Dragons. It is a totally different (and, I might add, vastly inferior) RPG that shares a couple of name similarities. It reminds me of a video game that was put to paper. It has a couple of novel ideas, but nothing to make it worth playing.

They shoulda just called it Sewers and Suckfests, or something like that.

Howdy mate, played 1st, 2nd, 3.5 and also a branch off of black books, epic series.

Played all the TSR Gold Box series including Krynn, Pools of Radiance, Secret of Silver Blades etc, had the Gold Pack that included the training game Hillsfar.

First cracked into the game in 1987, and played quite regularly ever since. I remember the days of the Original rangers, the ones that could cast a combination of Magic User spells and Cleric spells. Thacos in the minus and an AC of -10 were the bees knees.

I still have some of the Red Books at home.

Happy to contribute or assist in any way

Sorry folks - I've been busy at work AND heavily distracted by all the news in DDO land.

I'll be getting in touch with some questions for people shortly.

I'm very excited about where our game is going. I know it's not to everyone's taste, but it's great to see Turbine thinking about how to invigorate DDO and keep it strong for many years to come.

**** Riott, i just saw the link to the youtube video. That was the night I was over there too. I had no idea he ever posted that on youtube. Way cool man! I would have been hounding you soooo hard to get into that pnp group after seeing yalls game if you didnt live so freaking far from me.

Amabel, Riott hosts the coolest pnp groups ive ever seen at his house. If I could vouch for anyone in regards to hardcore pnp players it would be Riott. They even have the figurines for all the mobs. They draw out the module details on the table, set up the mobs and they even have wireless motorola text pads for each chair for private communicatio with the DM or other players. Really in depth to say the least.

Yeah that was pretty cool. He posted it not long after he shot it.

new adventures, new stories. Same fun.

Yes, and the DM would tailor the adventures to the party and a good DM could go for hours without rolling dice and you never noticed - or cared.

The DM could make house rules to improve the playability of that session based on characters and the players themselves which wouldn't impact other sessions.

The problem with the computer game is that as you add more variables (new items, rule changes, easy buttons), the changes apply globally to all parties and it is a very difficult job (like writing a module to be released to the public - a good DM would make changes but the computer can not so all decisions affect everyone equally). Something I recognize as very difficult for Turbine to do, so I give Props to the Devs for that difficult job and what they are trying to achieve. The modules in conventions were strictly ran with pre-made characters or strict character building guidelines. This is a free-for-all online and as they add more "house rules" - such as stores inside the dungeon, the balancing becomes even more difficult. When a PnP campaign gets out of hand, it falls apart. I just hope Turbine has that in the back of their mind that the enjoyment needs to be there and not some bean counter asking "will this change make more money"?

I met my husband when he was DM'ing a game in his barracks room. They were looking for a few more players and a friend asked me if I was interested in joining in. This was Jan 1986. It is 2009 and he is still my DM all we need are a few more players. When he would bring his sailor buddies over they brought the Captian Morgans and I collected car keys. We would play friday night to Sunday evening. I so miss those days. I don't do the DR or the Dew, so Coke or home made Honey mead for me and I can hang with Cheetos or Doritos!! I still go pale when my husband talkes about pulling out Temple of Elemental Evil......

Thank you everyone for your contributions. I wish I could have involved more people, but there simply wasn't space.

I'll try and do another take on PnP, maybe focusing on a more narrow topic, for people that missed out this time.

One thing is very clear - DDO is a game for real D&D fans, not just a namesake.
