ie +5 attack = means you have higher chance to hit = need smaller number on d20
-5 ac = means mob is hard to hit = need higher number on d20

whenever i tell this to new players they understand it better but looking at my current batch of students in my college...... i wonder if they can even understand the dumbed down 3.0 ver

I wrote my history capstone paper - 20 pages- on rule changes from Advanced to 2nd edition D&D and the way that D&D changed the world. I got an A. I am happy to sit down for an interview if you are serious. I have a room full of D&D rule books, supliments, literature and toys all D&D related. I also spend about 40 hours a week playing DDO. DId I mention that I have a beholder tatooed on my sholder? It is the one from the 1st edition Monster manuel. I went to Dave Arneson's wake and have his old cell # in my cell phone still. I defy you to find a bigger D&D geek than me!
Ignore the spelling mistakes... but this is the guy I was talking about. He really does know everything there is to know about D&D (in all its incarnations).

A increasing AC just always seemed more logical to me even when I started over 30 years ago.

The other kids were all friends of mine.

Well in 85 I didnt have more hair then you (military) but 10 years earlier when I started playing dnd I had a bunch more and I do now to. I remember seeing this story long ago it ticked me off and I didnt watch 60 minutes for about 15 years. them and their yellow journalism anyways was intersting to find out we all know at least sorta of some one from the story.

What an awesome response. The genesis for this idea was reminesing with my guildies about the TSR Goldbox games, and then some old PnP campaigns.

There are obviously some veterans here and I'm sure there are some amazing stories. I need to figure out how to do justice to it all. On top of that I have a terribly busy week at work coming up, so it may take a week or two, but I'll get down to it and try to put together a special episode of On the Couch that does justice to the subject matter.

I expect to get in touch with plenty of the people in this thread privately as I pull it all together.

Corn chips? Don't you know there's only two options for proper snacks at a D&D table? Either Dr. Pepper and twinkies or Mt. Dew and Cheetos. Anything else is an abomination! ABOMINATION I TELL YOU!!!!

It would be really cool to play a PnP game again. Though I gotta bring pizza and beer. I still have my lucky D20. Only roll it it life or death situations because I dont want to roll all of the good rolls out of it

The older versions of the game actually pre-date me... however the first time I played it was called AD&D and my cousin had every book and a subscription to dragon magazine, and an older red-box... world most of which somehow ended up in my possession somehow? After those initial

My view on the game however was that AD&D for as complicated as it was.. and the restrictions on race, class and it's overall design. It played much nicer, cleaner and more attune to general relationship of the lore previously envisioned in our past social ideas. This was the last version really design By Gygax and his team. The experience tables, loot tables and racial abilities, class restrictions made for slower progress however, it balanced all playing... Gygax understood when it came to the game it was all about the role and not the powers of the character... it was about Role and Roll (decision and chance) thus the d20 fit the game very well. I absolutely prefered Thaco and I played a ranger in Greyhawk for a long long time... Later I have played a bard - yes under AD&D , a druid, and rogue before. I also played a ranger into epic levels under 3.5... although the power and flexibility of the system unleashed a versitility - the game became more lacking of it's original intent, and actually lacking some of it's fun...
