Making use of an Anti-Virus program works as well as a good firewall.

Do you think a trojan will sell for a large scale?

Good luck, sorry to hear you had an issue.

I do realize the environment is different...it used to be accepted techie wisdom that you couldn't catch a virus unless you clicked on something...that changed close to 2000 with different propogation techniques that hooked the vulnerable by core design Windows OS.

However, I keep a firewall & antivirus up constantly and I avoid behavior & websites that tend to vastly increase the probability of catching something crippling. The only issues I tend to have are complications & vulnerabilities created by the kids downloading nagware/spamware under the guise of a 'free game'. Mostly this is handled by education & consistently removing the garbage when I catch it.

That includes AOL & any/all toolbar's offered by ANYBODY. None of it is really needed...best case scenario it saves you seconds to do something you could do yourself by going directly to a search engine.

    Default Please

...to the original poster...please refrain from giving real world advice about things you do not have sufficient knowledge about. The poster that talked about downloading free games, toolbars, ect... is absolutely spot on. His list is far from comprehensive, but thats the right idea.

And, reformatting and reinstaling your hard drive is like buying a new car in response to needing an oil change. If you are infected witha virus, seek the help or advise of a professional who will clean the computer up and/or provide you with the proper tools to do it yourself.

the only positive thing about (i assume) younger folks like yourself reinstalling your operating system at the first sign of teouible it that it is SUCH a hassle, that perhaps it will eventually deter you from doing the things you shouldn't.

let me add file sharing programs, illegal use of torrent programs, social networking sites, porn sites, free coupon programs, and casino gambling sites to the avoid at all cost list.

I've never had any problems with Social Networking sites.....I use Facebook and Myspace fairly frequently and my computer has never caught anything from them.

I also play Poker on Poker Stars quite frequently and I have never caught anything from that either.

Not sure if you mean the less popular sites, I have little experience with anything other than the main stream ones.

Oh, and if a Forum Mod could switch this thread over to Technical assistance, or General Discussion that would be great.
