Default Is quicken necessary for a Wizard?

will someone please go into a lengthy discussion of their featen quicken and if they like it and if they feel it is necessary for a caster.

one problem i have run into is i have 2 sorcerer and have never really played a high level wizard. this is my 1st because there are things i wanted to do with the build that lent itself to playing a wizard. that being said their seems to be some "slowness" or "lag" with casting wizard spells? perhaps i'm just not used to it.

i know clerics often will taken the quicken feat to make sure they are not interrupted. guess i'm wondering is it the same for wizards? do you guys think this feat is necessary?

Nope. I have a capped (16) wizzy and they just cast a little slower than a sorc and with longer cool-down timers on spells. It's not much a difference and I only tended to notcie it if I had to "nuke" something.

I find it useful for fogs (I can't stand the slow animation)

    Not being interrupted is nice.

But, with all those metamagic feats, what else would you take? Enshrew? Enlarge?

I think you'll get lots of differing opinions on quicken. I have a dwarf wiz with 28 con and 34 int. His concentration score is quite high. And if I play him right (meaning know when to cast which spell), I don't need quicken at all (swapped it for heighten).

There are times that I wish I had it, but not enough to get rid of my heightened webs/cc. I will pick it up at level 20, but is it a game breaker to not have it? Not in my opinion.

    Default My primary reason

The primary reason I have it on my Wizzy is for the reconstructs. Most other spells are not "dramatically" affected, but when you need a recon during the heat of battle....you usually need it quickly.

Just my 2 cp. I solo a lot, so I recon a lot

is quicken necessary... no. it depends a lot on your play style whether it'll benefit you. if you're a front line caster that focuses more on doing the actual combat... rather than supporting others and managing buffs and control with the occasional firewall or finger/ban/dis judiciously applied... I'd say you want to consider it. Also if you use a lot of conjuration spells it's nice, as is for repair/reconstruct.

Its also useful for summoning monsters as the animation is excessively long. But I rarely summon monsters anyway so it doesn't do much for me. Its helpful in the Shroud sometimes too.

Empower + Extend + Maximize + Heighten. Heightened + Extended webs are pretty useful.

I find it vital when playing a WF wiz/rog who gets into combat a lot. I tried to rely on a high concentration, but found that my reconstructs were getting interrupted just when I needed them most.

Now I take Quicken off for buffing, and leave it on the rest of the time.

Luxury feat that wizards can afford if they so chose. I tend to spec it out by level eleven when I do take it. By then I am almost always in haste mode and +30 jumps allow me to caste most things mid air which I do more than most. The less you know an area the more usefull it is, and I might suggest it over my prefered luxury enlarge feat to newer player. More you know where to cc the less necissary it becomes.

I think I'd prefer Enlarge for the very few times it is useful. Range is always nice and IMO there isn't much call for Quicken on a Wizard whereas you could make slightly more use out of Enlarge....

Preferance really and the only reason I'd consider it on my Wizard is that he's a War-Forged and would like it for the Reconstructs although probably doen't need it.

I assume a Wizard or Sorcerer is at LEAST going to take Empower/Extend/Maximize/Heighten. That leaves 3 wizard bonus feats and 2 general feats. Spell Penn 1 and 2 are good choices, but you still have 3 wizard bonus feats.

If your wizard is a warforged, I say yes because there are times when you don't want reconstruct to fail. If your wizard uses a lot of long casting spells (symbols, webs, etc) then perhaps yes as well since it sucks to be interrupted and not be able to cast your symbol again for umpteen seconds. Otherwise, probably not as important/useful as other metamagics.

I had Enlarge at mid levels for PKing Beholders, but dropped it for Quicken once I had more fogs in my spellbook.

Now I just throw Heighten Web on Beholders and FoD them while they thrash around in the web

I got quicken at first hoping it would also reduce the cooldown time for casting spells. Unfortunately, that isn't the case so I switched it out for maximize instead. It would be nice if quicken also "quickened" the rate of cooldown. That way, you could cast spells rapid-fire.

Why can't you have maximize and quicken?

My wizard has Maximize, Empower, Extend, Quicken, and Heighten.

Ah, I forgot to mention that my character is a Sor, so he doesn't have the luxury of a ton of extra metamagic feats. The only three metamagic feats I have is Empower, Maximize, and Heighten (which the only time I use Maximize and Empower together is for bosses, other than that, I consistently have Heighten on).

And to answer your question, quicken isn't really much of a use to me since I normally stay in the back. Also, most of my spells have a short casting time anyway. I don't have any Summon Monster spells (preferring the utility and buff spells over them). So I just buy scrolls of Summon Monster VII, VIII, etc.

My 16 dwarf wizard doesn't have Quicken... Never really seen a use for it... but he doesn't usually get hit (Even if I do have aggro, I'm hasted and jumping, and can always get spells off)

Hah, that's just because you never do end game content!
Ok, so I already know that's a BS answer or you wouldn't be in Legion.

First, Wizards at level 20 get 5 free metamagics on top of their 7 regular (plus 1 if human) feats. Most wizards are not going to find it difficult to slot in quicken nor would it be a choice between quicken & enlarge or empower/maximize. You can get all of the above.

Quicken, is the easy button. It's different from the quick casting done by a Sorceror in that once you get started with the actual animation, it completes no matter what even if you're knocked down. It's for those times when even being ridiculously good at caster twitch play to avoid spell interruption isn't enough.

Last, my own first Wizard kept enlarge but tossed quicken (I leave enlarge off most of the time) to pick up a toughness feat back when mod6 was introduced and I discovered a need for HP. I do plan to buy it back, but, I learned before ever getting it how to survive without it. At the moment, I have something like a 40+ concentration which tends to be enough most of the time. I do recommend getting your score with buffs & items up to a constant 30+ as an absolute minimum.

It's a personal choice. I'd say, don't even consider getting it until at least 12th if not 15th level and, consider it AFTER other metamagics & feats that are used all the time or have more utility. Even if you only use it once in a blue moon, having the option to do so is pretty awesome.
