I tried making an Elf Wizard before, but they seem very fragile and have no means of healing themselves. I would like to play one though.
How do you non-WF wizards survive in missions and whatnot?

Low levels: mage armor + shield spell.....
Mid levels: running, jumping, CC spells (solid fog/web, etc..) and shield blocking
High levels: UMD
I prefer human btw... easier to get a decent amout of hp and the free feat is great.
Max Int. Rest in Con.
I'm not sure how you're coming up with them being fragile. My drow ( same Con penalty as an elf ) wizard has 321 HPs at level 16. If that seems frail on a caster, you're doing something very wrong.
Aquiring the UMD for CSW wands insn't hard at all. Using heal scrolls will require a little more grinding and pre-planning.

My non WF caster is a drow. I was into it because of the Maximum INT, which is messed up by being Lawful Good, but thats another story. However yes high CON makes it so that you can be more survivable. Casters really don't have much going on for them with other stats, a STR item makes you decent for carrying your gear, Dex is pretty much moot, Wisdom isn't bad but usually you'll be able to buff yourself against Will saves, like GH's immunity to fear.
I agree though with whoever said people whould play non WF casters. the fragility of them at their mid levels does make you learn to play an evasive game, and not everyone has done that.
humans can also get 20 second +5 skill boosts (also can be +5 to saves, AC, armor, attack) from enhancements, which are great for UMD, haggle (use it every time you sell), jump ...
rogues and rangers get this as a class enhancement, but humans are the only race to get it.
Narran Wolfreyr (Elven Tempest Ranger 18 /Rogue 1 /Monk 1)
Gnargha (the Beautiful) (HOrc Frenzied Berserker 20/4)
Tigrata Azulena (TR'd supercaster in progress)

some tips
A wizard should always be buffed to the teeth...stone skin, GH, blur, displacement, resists (fire acid cold mostly) ele prots, fire shield, haste, rage, jump, and tumble at all times.
lastly no matter how tough your wizard is, how much SP, it is all useless if you are not a thinking player
Debuff monsters before going in fo the kill, stay at range, use angles and corners, dart in and out from obstacles
and when in the open stay on the move...learn how to fight moving make sure to draw mobs back to melees and block in narrow spaces with a firewall up.
A good wizard in a party can most mission seem like a cake walk witht heir miriad of buffs, debuffs, and focued attacks
Choose your spots, wizard mana needs to count, dont just unload on the big monsters, take the time to debuff them first (doesnt draw aggro!)
Dont waste mana, let the melees eat your light work, dont PK and fod every thing cuz you want to boost your ego
in raids, debuff the big monster, step back, and use your UMD to heal the fighters and clerics, it will shock them that you can, when the boss is waning move in with all of your left over SP and smash him.
use your head and you will be fine, like all characters, its how you play, not what the character is, and not all players are equal.. Oh and low levels will suck big time!
Good luck.

For me the immunities and the selfhealing you get from being Warforged more than make up for the 1 lower DC, compared to Drow Wizards.
Both can reach the "unsquishy" territory if build and equipped correctly.
- Max INT, rest in CON.
- Take "Insightfull Reflexes" and "Thoughness"
- Get yourself the best COn and False Live items you can get.
- Keep Displacement and Stoneskin up all the time.
- Buff yourself with the Jump-Spell and learn to jump and evade. You deserve to be killed if you just stand there and let the monsters whack you.
Erzskalde (Warchanter) / Erzassassin (just passing through - ignore me) / Erzsoldat (waiting for TR-time) / Erzschmied (ranged Artificer)
Halfling Wizzard w/Dragonmarks
You'll have good self healing and can spot group heal.
