D&D games need to be balanced, too.

See DMG p. 13 for proof if you don't want to believe me on words alone.

"Others do it too" never convinced your parents and it's not going to convince me either.

It only means that there are other problems in the game than Wall of Fire.

Remember when I said it was overpowered compared to other spells? Just checking.

It makes some things completely trivial it's that imbalancing, the AI completely ignores the danger, and players get free run to run across their own firewalls or even fight in the middle of them untouched.

Also the spell makes the same shape all the time, it's a rectangular piece.. which is often cast in midair by the game interface.

    Suggestion 1:
Make the firewall made up of about 6 pieces of fire.. each of which falls down onto the surface separately so you cannot make a firewall in midair anymore.

Suggestion 2: Make the spell deal 2 fire damage a click to even friendlies standing inside it.. but no damage if you're near it.. so a lesser fire resistance item will keep you immune or a resist fire. This should also include monsters standing in their own firewalls.. subject to the same rules.

Suggestion 3: Make the spell MODAL with 2x options.. the second options being a ring of fire around the caster themselves. (the 6 pieces of firewall from suggestion 2, just get placed in a different spot)

Suggestion 4: Make the AI take notice of dangerous persistant spells like this and at least the intelligent monsters (look at their stat) should try and path around or at least out of the dangerous areas.
Didn't read any of the replies because surely they must all point out how completely bad this idea is..

Then I saw your forum join date and realised you have no idea what your talking about. Come back after you've leveled a wizard or sorceror to 16 and tell me you still feel this way.

Now having taken the time to read thru the thread, I thought I might point some things out that seem to be causing confusion.

    A) Firewalls DO NOT STACK. If there are 2 or more firewalls in close proximity to each other, any monster near them will take damage from one OR the other but NOT BOTH. Also there doesn't appear to be any mechanic in place to pick the one that does the most damage which is extremely frustrating when grouping with weaker wizards and thier pathetic non 100+ pt firewalls.

    B) Damage is not based on "Passing thru" the firewall. You get NO additional ticks, you get NO additional damage from "dragging a mob thru" the firewall. You only need to keep the mob IN the firewall. All that running around you see wizards doing isn't to drag the mob back and forth thru it, its to avoid getting hit. (NOTE: The description may state damage dealt on passing thru, but the game is coded so that once a mob takes a "tick" it wont take another "tick" for X seconds, so the mob will take the "being near it tick" and not take the "passing thru it tick". At least that has been my experience, I have never taken the time to truly watch "excatly" when the ticks are occuring as I'm using running around trying not to get hit.)

    C) Most of the "solutions" I've seen here fail to address the REAL problem, and I hate to be the one to keep beating the same drum but someone has to. The AP system is the real culprit here. Firewall is supposed to do at MOST 2D6 +20 at 20th level. Empowered "increases the damage from variable effects by 1/2". So a "maximized empowered firewall" cast at level 20 should be doing 12 + 20 + 1d6 to a monster "passing thru it". There are no "enhancements" in tabletop to do 50% more damage, or rods that add another 50% to bring the damage to 100+

Simplest solution, remove the AP enhancement system. problem solved.
