Lightbulb Altar of Transmogrification or "Pimp My Toon"

    Meet Tarot.

Tarot is very sad. She loves the way this particular robe looks on her. The color is perfect for her complexion and hair, and the haunting look of the cloth fits her personality perfectly. This is actually the Robe of the Duality from the Catacombs, that most folks only wear for a level or two, if at all.

Currently, Tarot only wears her favorite robe (the essence of role-play) while she is tooling about Stormreach, Gianthold or Meridia doing administrivia . Once she enters an adventure area or quest, off comes her favorite looking robe and on goes a Deathblock or Fearsome Robe of Spell Resistance 19. Having to make this switch makes Tarot sad (and sometimes she forgets to make the switch, which makes the quest/raid mobs very happy).

Here’s an idea…what if the folks at Turbine installed an Altar of Transmogrification somewhere in Stormreach? What’s an Altar of Transmogrification you ask?

Like many other altars throughout Stormreach, Meridia and The Shroud that you, my fellow players know so well, this altar has slots to place items into. However, this altar only has two slots (three if payment item required).

The first slot is known as the “Look” slot. This is where you place the armor item that has the look you want to keep.

The second slot is known as the “Attribute” slot. This is where you place the armor item that has all of the attributes you want to keep (everything written about the item upon examination, as well as any hidden attributes).

So in this example…Tarot places the Robe of Duality into the “Look” slot, and an ugly green and fuzzy Deathblock Robe of Spell Resistance 19 in the “Attributes” Slot. Maybe she needs to add something to pay for this somehow…a full Drangonshard perhaps…or some other new collectible? I believe both items should have to be bound to her first. Anyways, Tarot makes sure everything is set how she wants (she doesn't want to get a green and fuzzy Robe of Duality back), and presses “Transmogrify”. She gets a message “Your Transmogrified Deathblock Robe of Spell Resistance 19 is complete”, and the name, all stats, race/level requirements, etc. have now been transmogrified on to what used to be (and still looks like) The Robe of Duality.

Tarot takes her new Deathblock Robe of Spell Resistance 19 out and puts it on. It looks exactly like her old Robe of Duality, but is now useful to her at level 14! She goes to her next adventure happily and looking quite stunning and sassy.

How many times have you pulled that +5 Mithral Fullplate only to be crestfallen when you tried it on to find some ugly pink & green armor you wouldn’t wish on a troll?

Another thought: Think if you could match looks and attributes by the classes as listed in the auction house? Ponder if you will the happy, frolicking barbarians sprinting about town, finally being able to wear hide armor (medium - look), but with the stats of +5 Mithral Fullplate (medium - attribute)! Remember...its still +5 Mithral Fullplate, just with the look of hide armor that would please a Barb. Also, the Hide Armor Manufacturers Guild (HAMG) will be dancing in the streets knowing their product now has more value than just as an exchange commodity for gold at the vendors.

Thus ends my proposal to Turbine to do something for those of us who care about flair. Coming from an IT background, I know this wouldn't be that difficult to do. Any constructive feedback on the idea is welcome. Remember, if you are one of those who could care less how your character looks, you need never use this altar. For those of us who do, it would be a wonderful addition to the game.

I had been thinking about suggesting a feature like this. The idea I had was to use the Stone of Change, put in one Bound and Attuned armour, one other armour and some ingredients. On mixing the Bound and Attuned armour would take on the appearance of the other armour.

I'd like this feature to see some more variety in high level armour/shields even if everyone really is wearing the same things (DT/icy/blue scale).

    Default agreed

with my new rogue the other day, i did not get a good choice of of end rewards from a tr hard run

i picked a lightning guard robe of something & when i put it on i laughed & then immediately sold it

this would be a cool feature

i am lucky because right now, i am wearing some adamantine chain that looks good, but this would help for the future

That would be sweet indeed... and might give me a reason to shop at the House K armor vendor again!

I'm guessing that the item the appearance was copied from is destroyed? In your example, the Robe of Duality?

You'll be shocked to learn that lotro already has this feature.

The way it's implemented there is you have your "real" armor appearance, then you have two "cosmetic" appearances that you can change between.

Maybe some year that tech will trickle down.

    I like this Idea too.

I don't know that the Item should Need to be destroyed.
especally if there was an inherrent monetary and or collectable cost.

It would only be asking to change the skin appearance really.
I would ask a Set Monetary and Collectable cost.

That way you do not need to destroy items that can still be useful to other characters.

I prefer this solution. Basically two armor slots. One for effects, one for looks.

    Well...they are transmogrified! lol

The way I initially saw it, both robes would be consumed with only the new one remaining.

This solution (two slots, one for looks and one for effects) would work for me as well...so long as Tarot gets to look as she wishes

However, I would remind all of the truly wonderful cloaks they have on LOTRO...how they shift in the wind and move with the player. They've had those since day one. What we still have in DDO are cloaks that all have the enjoyable hidden feature of cloak invisibility turned on.

I like it! I find myself with +5 plain jane armor that that looks nicer than several sets of the +5 mith FP I have. I also think that weapons should be subject to this as well.

I'm not sure if named items or greensteel should be included. But it would be nice to see Icy Raiment's that dont all look the same.

One can only imagine what goes through the heads of the designers/artists when they crank out yet another piece of gawd-awful ugly gear. There's so much of it, one can only assume they do it on purpose: "Hey, let's make a short sword which is bigger than a Dwarven axe, and put a really goofy looking serrated hand guard on it. Yeah, that'd so rock! And don't forget, if a particular set of armor or a robe looks too nice, be sure to put a dorky looking backpack or some truly hideous shoulder wings on it."

character customization is a HUGE draw for this game that should extend to character aesthetics...can we see our sheathed weapons too?

Oh god... the single shoulder wing... sigh...

There are good designs and bad designs, but that one has to be the worst.

It's vying for first place with that awful armour that looked as if it met up with a can opener and lost. I think it was supposed to be based on something vaguely historically oriental. Instead it just looked goofy.
And are the designers colourblind? I've seen some really nice robes marred irreparably by sticking that teal and white collar thing on it....NO!

And WHY oh WHY is there not a single barber in the whole of Stormeach! After 3 years, the bugs in peoples facial hair and dreads are sure to bring on an epidemic infestation! Did we learn nothing from the kobold infestation?
