Those few who care about their AC wear a Prot item.

For all the others = waste of mana, which may very well be the difference between a normal healing and having to drink a major mana pot in a tight situation.

WHAT! Come on...10 points of mana does not account for having to drink a major mana pot.

Now keeping Maximized on durring the entire quest...that accounts for drinking a major mana pot.

The best use of mass SoF is to see what kind of quest you are going to have. Cast at the start. If you see shields come up on all the melees, you're going to have a rough run

As i said these mana points may be the drop that mad the barrel overflow.
On my sorc i remember many occasions where i was just missing 5 or 10 SP to get off that one more Frewall or Finger to cut down that last mob. But i dont have them, although i buffed myself with Jump. Because i like jumping. So i had to drink a pot to stop a hairy situation from wandering in the direction of a possible wipe.

And as a Sorcerer i can cut down a bit on mana spending when i see myself getting too low too fast, while a cleric typically cant just will the party to need less combat healing. So such a on-the-edge situation will happen more often.

There is a big difference between having the spell cast on you afther asking for it, and expecting it as a standart buff.

This thread reminds me too much of all those rangers who barkskin the whole group automatically, even the Wizard and the robe wearing barbarian. And felling good about them having liftet the AC of the dual-wielding level 16 fighter up to 34. And then ask the Sorcerer / Wizard / Cleric for Resist Energy buffage....

And if all the melees that have any AC (or incorrectly think they have AC of any worth) stopped wearing their Prot +5 items, that could translate into another 50-100 SP being wasted.

I agree...1 AC is better than SoF

I don't think that it is a "waste of effort until we hit level 18" though...the extra 1 to your AC isn't that big of a deal. But the extra slot to your inventory is a BIG DEAL.
If that 1 AC isn't that big a deal. Why not buy SoF (+3) Potions? That way you wouldn't have to bother about the cleric and you'd still have your item slot. You'd only lose 1 AC from the pot to the SoF spell itself. Not a big deal right?

And you could have as many of them as you needed to get you through a quest.

LOL. Thats exactly what I use it for. I'm always in pugs, and have found its a good indicator of what to expect - am I going to be a nursemaid or can I go crazy with offensive spells?

I carry SoF mass on all my clerics and throw it out there with all my other mass buffs. It is not a big deal to carry and if it helps even a little, then no big deal. If I see no one taking benefit from it (no spell animation) then I don't use it again for that group. But more often than not, I see at least half the party/raid group getting the benefit.

In a non dispelling quest my cleric has the mass version and always starts with an extended mass sr mass aid mass sof and .... I would swear there is one more. Ah well, anyway, I figure plus four ac can't hurt the bard that is sitting on a thirtythree ac. Only need to prevent one hit in thirty two min to make the mana for the mass casting worth it. My two cents.
Varr's all over. Cannith Varr getting the love currently.
