most good bands.
some dont... "smashing pumpkins" were horrible live.
Anything "Pop" usually sucks.
Some bands are very different live.
John Mayer has a very different sound live, lots of people have trouble with his shows because he adds so much blues to them, rather than radio edits people are used to.
Love Mayer...
Actually, a lot of good studio bands don't sound anywhere near as good live, sometimes simply because of the nature of the music (Beck is one I like that would fit in this category for example imho... not Jeff Beck, but Beck... to clarify), and then there are those who are making lots of money that I wouldn't even classify as being music. I listen to a lot of genres covering broad time periods. Can you say Gershwin? I knew you could...
I have no problem with "aggressive" music, as long as they can sing not just scream and use reverb, and know how to play more than power chords. I've seen a lot of "thrash" or subset genre bands, over the years... Anthrax, King Diamond, Fifth Angel, etc.. that got old fast for me... although it has it's place at times, musically it tends to be very limited, and like certain other things, at my age tends to give me a headache... but, I digress. Rap.. well, imho in general it's bad poetry put to someone else's music by people with inferiority complexes so severe they have a need to prove themselves by whatever means... although there is the rare exception. Then there are pop artists that have no real talent other than being able to hold a note after learning how to harmonize with the radio who just have really good production teams... ( I'm sure not everyone will agree with my views : ) )
Part of why Mraz and Mayer are so good is because they know their music history which only people with a true love of music bother with... you can see the influence of crooners like Sinatra and Crosby in Mraz, and Mayer has obviously been heavily influenced by blues (the mother of rock) and classic rock. Those who truly love music, not just a particular genre, tend to make the best musicians imho.... just like anything else in life, it's best if it comes from the heart.
To quote an old Saturday Night Live skit... more cowbell...
bands that improvise as they play tend to put on the best shows cause its different for them each time too. rockstars hate the grind too.
anthrax persistance of time was a great album but the tour sucked worse than a jim stafford concert

I am really liking this thread, for someone like me, on the younger side of life it's cool to hear what other people dig. I enjoy any type of music and this is a great way to "taste" if you will, the other types of music out there...

Straws Pulled at Random
What solace, lies in the arms of fate
-The ill embrace of uncertainty
When did I leave this, in other hands
-To be pulled down at chance
Ripped away by destiny-claws
Am I another of fate's possessions
Dwelling, the lie of freedom
Just another straw pulled at random
Reclaimed by deceiving, time
A silent judgment I can not overrule
Drawn back into the origin-vortex
Uprooted and ground to dust
Retracted into anti-existence
A magnet repelled by life's polarity
Denied the self control of fate
We flow suspended in semi-life
Until the ever imminent day
When oblivion claims our breath
Nowhere indefinitely. Not dead, not alive
Existence-patterns ripped of symmetry. As will and
Fate divide.
Have I appeased the gods of fate
Am I allowed another day
Must I die to escape
The scanning eyes of death
