    Default Having some issues

First: i'm a computer idiot, so thats out of the way.

    Second:

Recently (ie:last few days) Whenever i start up Ddo, and at the least Eve online, almost immediately, a loud noise comes from computer. It does not appear to be from the fans, as they are not running any faster and i can get noise to stop (coming later), and fans continue chugging along.

If i click out of DDO, we'll use that to keep it simple, and use internet for awhile, noise will stop, only to return once i go back into DDO.

I have a quad core cpu, when going into task manager from ddo, this will also stop noise, but more importantly, and this is why i think is the cpu, under the performance tab i have four boxes. I'm told this is for core 1-4. Cores 1,2,4 chug along at or below first graph line, core three warps to the top as soon as i am running ddo in the foreground, noise will start minutes later and wont stop until i exit out of ddo, or put it in the background. Once ddo is in the background core three drops to level of other four.

This is only a recent development and no changes have been made to my computer.
Here's where the idiot part comes in, i'll try to post my dxdiag, and below are what i know of my system specs:

MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1
IntelCore2 Quad cpu q9300@2.50 ghz, 4.0gb ram, nvidia geforce 8800gt

system about a year old, no issues whatsoever before this.

I know this isnt ddo related but we have some of the comp saviest folks out there, any thoughts appreciated.

I do not seem to suffer any game issues while this is going on but i wont lie, i havent stayed logged on longer than ten minutes, mostly with ddo in background so it doesnt blow up.

    R

Some video cards can get some pretty bad 'coil whine', and would behave as you explained, though usually it starts right when you enter a game and not after a few minutes. If it's in a case on the floor you really shouldn't be able to hear it. I have my computer disgorged on my table and the noise is very apparent on my GTX 285.

i've moved it up so its next to me, and its very noticeable and very loud, where it never was before.

I thought at first it might have been video card, and it still might be, but as i said, core three, as soon as i put ddo in the foreground, in play mode, it shoots right to the top, once its in background, it quiets down after a minute and core three drops to normal. I'm not sure thats graphics card related, again, i'm an admitted comp idiot so i may be wrong.

Honestly, your best thing to do right now is put the computer up on your desk..

    Open up the case...

And then listen to where the noise is coming from.

Don't touch anything inside. Take a picture with your cell phone or something, and put it up here so that we can tell you which piece is making the noise.

Well, i cant take a pick, but it seems to be coming from the right hand side of the case as i look at it while its open.

At very top is where my dvd drive is, then empty spot below it because there's nothing there, then below that is two eight track cartridge looking things. Two types of connections, one with red and black wires coming from bundle in center of machine, other looks like a phone connector, just on the side, not straight out. Below those are male receptors set into device.

As an aside, i just did a system restore to a week previous. Now it seems ddo runs on core one (which i thought it always did) and does not spike to top, only goes up halfway. and cores 2-4 stay near bottom. I had always understood that this game doesnt utilize four core drives yet so core one was always default.

I'm going to leave it on for awhile and see what happens, it appears at first thought that i somehow, or a program somehow swapped ddo to run off core three as opposed to core one. I would assume core three is weaker than core one and it was straining.

Sound plausible? again, sorry for my newbness, but thats best i can do.

Edit: it would appear i was incorrect. Noise is now active. tho does not seem as loud

Close the blinds so no one can see you...

Ok, now cover one ear, and use a paper towel roll against your other ear to try and isolate the sound...you gotta figure out where that is coming from...

Right hand side doesn't mean a whole lot. Side where your DVD drive is?

At very top is where my dvd drive is, then empty spot below it because there's nothing there, then below that is two eight track cartridge looking things.
If they don't project out the front of the case, most likely these are your hard drives.

yes on the right hand side, my dvd starts at top, then empty spot for a second drive. Under that appears to be what 4+5 are on your comp layout, only yours is a side view, mine are head on view. Under that is nothing but wires.

I did the paper towel trick and i just cant tell. In your pic at upper left hand corner appears to be something with a fan, mine is the same but much larger. Under that, centered i believe is the heat sink. I just cant tell if sound is coming from heat sink in middle or drives to right. When the sound is low, i swear its heat sink, but as it gets louder it seems to move to drives.

When ddo is not running, its quiet at as a church mouse. One minute into game the sound starts rising and as long as i stay in ddo it keeps going. when i swap to backgroud app, you can hear it soften a bit, but it doesnt stop, or at least it hasnt yet. Like now, when im not logged on, there's nothing. I keep repeating myself sorry.

So, it's either my drives or heatsink. Either way its not something i can fix myself, so i'm gonna have to take it to get looked at, thankfully it does it every time so as long as they have internet i'll be able to show them pretty quick.

Thx all, guess i was just looking for a quick fix.

    Thats the one.

The sound really seems to be coming from drives, but i cant really tell, also as sound powers up it seem to start at heat sink and move to drives at its loudest, tho i'm sure its an echo effect.

    Thx for trying tho,

    Talking Noises in the dark!

It actually sounds like a CPU alarm, since you state that your duty cycle for core 3 jumps to max when you are in one of the offending apps. The sound would be coming from a tiny little condensed speaker on the motherboard. Very hard to find without the layout diagram. I would get on Intel's web site and see if you can find any information regarding this issue. Also, I would call them and ask why you have one hyperactive core while the others sit idly by and watch it try to kill itself. This is, after all, a fairly new CPU.

When you say alarm i think fire alarm, this is just a loud fan-like sound, mebbe a humming behind it, and the more i listen to it, the more i'm convinced its the heat sink. I'm gonna have the wife and one of the kids listen to it when they come home, if both of them point to the heat sink then thats gotta be it.

Remember, when i did a system restore, ddo jumped cores from three to number one, and first core only goes up to half when its running.

Heat sink appears to be a much cheaper problem to fix than drives so thats my vote lol, either way its not something i can do myslef so i'll have to take it in.
