I propose a new type of hireling. These are hirelings that rather than attempting to duplicate PCs, they are truly NPCs. The idea behind these is that they have no aggressive or defensive modes. They are always on passive, so they are limited to providing constant or passive effects and bonuses.
Anyone have other NPC hireling suggestions?
Torch-Bearer: This hireling only has two commands available on the control bar: light torch & douse torch. He will dutifully follow his contract purchaser around, providing light as best as he can. More expensive torch-bearers can provide better quality lighting.
Standard-Bearer: This hireling raises the party's spirits, fame, and infamy. Just by being around, the hireling provides a morale bonus to hit, damage, ac, diplomacy, and intimidate. More expensive standard-bearers provide this bonus to a larger radius from them, and increase the amount of the bonus.
Traveling Merchant: This hireling follows along with you not to provide you with special deals, but to give you convenience at a premium. He carries a portable forge, so he can repair items, and he can sell you general goods and buy your unwanted inventory. More expensive merchants carry better merchandise, such as spell components, potions and wands.
