    Default Thank you Khyber

My 13 year old son shaved his head today for Cancer research. He also donated his long blond hair to be made into a wig for a child with cancer. He has on his own raised over $1100 dollars with more donations being received daily.

So you ask why am I posting this here? Well several of the donations came from people on the Khyber server that I have never met in person. When they found out what my son was doing they contacted me asking for a mailing address so they too could donate. It started with one player, which really amazed me but then cascaded and multiple players donated.

Again thank you very much Khyber. The players on this server never cease to amaze me.

    Thats reallycool!

I was a little boy with cancer and now i have only 1 kidney (but im ok).
Your son is a really great kid for doing this, its no small thing.
When the doctors at childrens hospital philadelphia cured me, my father would dress as santa and bring all the kids in the ward presents because he was so gratefull.
The sickness is terrible on so many levels for all who are involved. A full wig of hair is an amazing gift to these folks as well as the donations. My cousin recently got through breast cancer and was really happy to get one of these wigs. My mother asked me if maybe i would cut my hair and donate it, but i have dreadlocks(you can see in "whorutalkingtosarlona?") and im not sure they would like it as much as your sons gold locks Maybe i could send them to jamaica or something like that!

As a person that has been directly effected, I stand to applaud your boy!
He might like to read these posts and again thank him for me!

Amazing thing for your son to do at 13, especially if he chose to do it himself. I did something simliar when I got one of my first jobs. It was not as noble as Cancer Research but job required a hair cut. So insteadf of wasting my hair I donated it to http://www.locksoflove.org/ who also design hair pieces for sick children

It was his own idea. A teacher was teasing him about his long hair and offered him some cash to cut it. Gabriel told him to double it and he might think about it. The next day Gabe told the teacher he'd do it if the money was donated to cancer. That's what started it. Gabe lost 2 of his grandparents to cancer at a young age and a third has successfully beaten lung cancer (free for 7 years now)

What makes this even more amazing.. my son was born with a deformed ear which he has always hidden with his hair. He knew full well that getting shaved bald would reveal his ear and yet he went ahead and did it anyways regardless of any teasing he might face. (We are waiting till he is fully grown to have the ear corrected)

Baby girl I am very proud of my son. He's my 4th out of 5 kids and the most amazing person I have ever met. He is part of a pilot program developed by Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto for kids with severe learning disabilities. He is rated in the top 2% for the province in terms of severity yet has an IQ of 137. What he is doing with Sick Kids will help change curriculum and develop programs for kids with LD in future.

Incontinetia, I'm glad to hear you are a cancer survivor. Your father sounds like an amazing man.

PS Babygirl, kick Hordo's butt for me

I lost my grandfather (moms daddy)to cancer when I was 12. My mother died of cancer when I was pregnant with my 4th child. My father is a cancer survivor so far it's only been 3 years. I have to be very careful when it comes to illness and masses because of family history.

I grew my hair down to my waist so I could have them cut off 15" for locks of love. What your son has done is a wonderful thing for so many people. You truely have been blessed.

Some of you have expressed an interest in donating. Instead of sending funds to my son go to your local Cancer Society and donate. Even $5 helps. Tell them a 13 year old Canadian boy inspired you.

Ferr, you have no idea. This is really the tip of the iceberg. I talk with Talish/Mythe regularly and Gabe is a frequent subject of maternal awe and pride. As a long-distance friend I cannot tell you how much it warms my heart to know that such extraordinary people are not only out there but are touching upon my life and enriching my experience in life. The donation of the locks, something which I did twice in college (note, I did this in college yet he is but a young man!), which for me was an expedience and an afterthought, is for him an act of pure, honest generosity and kindness. Gabe truly is a mentsch among boys.

Thats very cool of your son and of the donators of khyber, I am growing my hair to donate for a wig myself got a little ways to go and I am going to have to thin it out before I get there as it grows in to thick. If more people were like your son the world would be a better place

    Nice job!

I've known several people with cancer. It's nice to see the younger generation taking up the fight. Teach your kids right from wrong and the world will change one child at a time.

Go to your local Cancer Society to make a donation. It really doesn't matter which chapter it goes to as it is all for the same cause. Just tell them a 13 year old boy inspired you. That would make my sons day.

To everyone else. Gabe is special and I feel blessed to be his mother. I have tried very hard to raise all 5 of my kids with decent values, to be responsible for their actions and to respect others and so far I've not done too badly. It's so important to lead by example. Perhaps that would explain why I play Mythe and am so passionate about helping people. I can't expect my children to do what I wouldn't.

Thanks Hordo. You know everything Gabe has been through in his short life and a lot of it is not pretty yet he despite everything is turning into a fine young man.

To the curious here is a link to the news story. At the bottom of the page is a video interview with my son. He's a bit nervous but then he is only 13 and not used to the attention.
