    Default Quick Grammar Lesson

    Ok.

    If I say:

Would anyone trade a scale for 2 stones?

I'm asking you if *You* would trade *Your scale* for *My 2 stones*.

    That is all.

Not so much a Grammar Lesson as a Reading Comprehension lesson.

    Not even that....

The original comment could also have meant that the man had no stones (ouch) or scales and was just curious if anyone who had either would make the trade.

Proper grammar and a crystal clear poster would have said " I would like to trade my 2 stones for your 1 scale. pst"

Why couldn't "anyone" be you in this trade. If you were willing to trade your scale for my two stones (instead of the other way around), then wouldnt that still fit within the above? In other words, your original question appears that you are wondering if "anyone" would make this trade. You did not explicity rule out yourself as someone who falls within the "anyone" category.

On the other hand, I guess one could argue that you are explicitly ruling yourself out because you know the answer already for yourself, and if you really were willing to trade your scale (as opposed to your stones), then you would already know the answer was definitely yes, and therefore the question would be irrelevant. Thus, we should assume that you would not ask a question you already knew the answer to, and therefore we should interpret that you really meant "anyone besides yourself". But, technically that would be an assumption on the reader's part, as it is possible that you were contemplating if "anyone" would make this trade, and may have even had some doubt whether you would or would not.

    Kind of like saying...

"Hmm...would anyone ever really consider sleeping with Rosanne Barr"

You might wonder that, even if you yourself arent sure whether in a drunken fit you might actually consider this. So it really isnt right for the reader to assume the questioner would not pose the question as they would already know the answer for themselves, as they might be on the fence.

Therefore, it seems like you should be writing this more clearly to avoid the whole "does anyone include the questioner" dilemma...

Would anyone trade their scale for my 2 stones?

Phrasing it in this way would be much more clear. Looks like the issue was more an error on the writer's part than on the readers comprehension.

I think, rather than trading two stones for a scale, you are giving two stones to a skank...which is really not the same thing.

I love it. I've actually never asked to trade any ingredients in this way, but there have been multiple instances of people asking the group something like this where I've agreed to the offer only to open a trade window and have the same items show up both sides of the transaction.
