But... if my party member is my "hard" target (as opposed to soft) shouldn't the focus remain on the party member as how else am I going to raise them real quick? The hard target should remain the target until the focus is either a) removed from said target, b) the target is no more. Death does not remove a player from the instance (normally).
If I have to target, they die, so re target.. that is going to get REAL annoying in about one death.

I always liked the idea of having each of the single target cure spells come up as a multi-option spell, like Resist Energy or Fireshield, with one optoin for Cure Ally, and one for Cure Undead (Heightening can even apply to this one!). Sure, it's a bit cumbersome, but that way you KNOW you won't cast it on an enemy accidentally. I suspect that it's even more relevant for LoH, which can be used as a rushed sort of thing.
Targeting damage spells like say fireball - are fired up into the ceiling, fail if the target is lost, or fails if the target runs behind or to the side of you - and every single monster in the game is always attempting to run behind you. Soft targeting will help a bit, but not if everything runs behind you.
If the soft target change targets a monster behind/beside/out of range - would there be an option for say the spell to just go off at your feet, or maybe straight ahead on a level plane (as opposed to up to straight up)?
While not really part of thise topic, the fact that even ooze is constantly attempting to flank players is super annoying given the general lag, and the amount of failed spells my wizard or cleric has seen is extremely frustrating. When you can SEE a monster in your 'front 3 hexes' say, but the spell fails because lag means the monster is actually somewhere behind you when it is supposed to go off.
If spells like that just landed at your feet - at least the flanking monster will still probably get hit - for a fireball/wall/area spell.
Will we still be able to click elsewhere on the screen to clear the focus orb? Or will we have to hit G?

The best solution here would be to allow people to map a button that, while pressed, supresses the soft-targetting system, thereby allowing positional spellcasting when appropriate for aoes like dancing ball and firewall and still use of soft-targetting for normal play.
i would map capslock to that instantly and be quite happy; tab to select hard target, capslock to supress softtarget and throw a geography-targetted spell.
Indeed - I almost always aim my webs onto the ground a few feet in front of the mob and rarely use a mob as a target - I'm going to have to turn off soft targetting to achieve this since I will no longer be able to have 'nothing' targetted any more. I use this for my cone of cold too since I like to aim at the center of the highest concentration of mobs which is often not marked by a mob I can (quickly) tab to. Being able to turn this system off temporarily would be very useful.
Please also make it a per character setting and not per account - I think I like this on my melee characters, but will probably have it turned off on my sorc for the reason described above.
