    Default PC for DDO?

OK I am tired of my x1950 problems. Here is a system I am going to build - anyone see any difficulties with this setup - or does anyone have any recommendations for something better?

    CPU: Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P
    RAM: 6 GB (3x2) OCZ Gold DDR3 1600 MHz
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1 GB
Hard Drive: Western Digital Velociraptor 10000 RPM 300 GB
    Power Supply: Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W
Case: Antec 1200 Steel Full Tower
CPU Heatsink: Vigor Monsoon III LT
DVD Drive: LG 22X DVD Burner Combo Drive
    OS: Vista Home Premium 64

I appreciate any feedback. I only know enough to be extremely dangerous.

    Very Nice PC!!

Personally i would go with XP Pro and scale back to 4 gig of ram, but that's only because i personally didn't like Vista 64 ... too many incompaitabilities with old games.. alot of people have issues with that.

i7 uses Triple Channel RAM (meaning he has to use a multiple of 3: 3 gigs of RAM, 6 gigs...12 gigs)

    1) you got some serious cash

    2) if you are going that high tech, go with a solid state drive for your primary
have a larger 2nd hard drive for the mundane stuff

    3) you might want to look at a Nvidia card over the ATI, less problems overall

But no matter how you look at it, it's a great system. Just remember you'll want a 24" + monitor to fet the most from your vid card

Unless your playing Old DOS games from the 80's there arent any significant Compatability problems with Vista 64 and GAMES. THe only major incompatability issues arrise from old Hardware thats no longer supported by the manufacturer.

2: Most SSD Drives arent great for a primary boot drive for a desktop machine. The appeal of SSD is the lower power consumption for laptops.
3: Less Problems? Sounds like some sort of bias to me. I have machines with both manufacturers and never encounter "More problems" with one over the other.

SSD drivers are fast and last longer with no moving parts. the down side is size and cost.

Bang for the buck, it's ATI all the was. I'm an Atholon person all the way (who does the ATI), but they do have a few compatibly flaws here and there. No biggy but if you're looking for the least problem especially with the cost of this system I'd recommend the Navidia

If he was looking for a cheep power house i'd say

    Atholon 6000 X2 black

    a standard 300 gig 7500k hard drive

ATI 3870 or Navidia 9800 (just the stanard ones)

    500w power supply

    2 gigs of DDR2 800 ram

    cheep case

and DDO will run fine, actually really good

Actually, the jury is still out on the "Last Longer" thing.

Most of todays SSD "Hard Drives" are nothign more than big memory cards. and they definatly have read/write cycle degragation over time.

Most are rated for 100k Read/Write cycles. a Windows Page file could tear that up in a matter of months.

Well any way you put it, you're building a kicka$$ puter there. It is complete overkill even for a resorce hog like DDO.

So have at it and have fun

LOL so you went from video card problems to building a whole new system. You can build one for me too and pass it my way. Although I'd still lean more to a nvida card, but thats my personal preference. I've just had less problems with them.

Not really. He has a huge budget PC there, and it would be awsome one at that. I just threw in what can be done for $500 or less

    And I'm way jealous

The only thing I would change is the PS from 750w to 1000w or better. That motherboard will support both crossfire and SLI and with the new video cards, you will need that extra voltage when you start adding on new hardware.

I hope SP2 for Vista will bring it in line with Windows 7. I am currently running Windows 7 beta 64-bit and it is everything Vista should have been.

Good point. not sure how much he'll need with the i7, it uses alot less power. and the high end vid cards make it so you don't really need to worry about SLI/Cross fire. But looking it up for the better safe than sorry seems smart to me

The Corsair is an Excellent power supply. Its More than adequet. Even if he decides to go Crossfire In the future.. However, I dont think any I7 Motherboards support Crossfire anyway.

Maybe. SInce ATI is owned by AMD, getting Intel to License Crossfire is a stretch.

EDIT: nvm, X58 Apparanetly does support crossfire. Nice to see the rivals working together on something for a change.

    Agreed on all points

I've had Giga MOBOs , hit or miss. If you are not an avid overclocker , its not worth it. Dont ever buy an AMD board from them. Memory problems galor.
Giga excels at provding great tools to accompany your chipset and components, again mostly for overclocking.

ATI VS Nvidia - Go with what you prefer, no strong evidence to convince me one is better than the other. Ive had issue with both. I can state , IMHO, Nvidia excels at hardware , ATI at Software and drivers. I hate Nvidia drivers and software, way behind ATI.

Silly question, but what is Crossfire and how is it different from SLI?

Also anyone have any recommendations for online site to buy components from other than Newegg and Fry's Outpost.com and TigerDriect?

newegg.com is the best for Online purchases. There are many specialty shops I use on occation for Water cooling, or tested memory, but the vast majority of my online purchases come from the egg.
