Default What should I bring to the party....

Hello all - this is my 1st Sorc - I'm really enjoying playing him.

I'm lvl 7 - last night I got my 1st party reject because I don't have Fire Wall yet!!!! It was no big deal, kinda funny really.

Anyway - back on topic... What Scrolls, Wands, Pots, ect do you sorcs purchase and always have with you for your groups? I have 1 or 2 wands and I rarely carry scrolls around. My UMD is fine for my lvl. I was just wondering if there are some must-haves I should always be carrying around for myself and my group.

    Thanx in advance,
    Lax

uh, whoever denied you into a party because you don't have wall of fire is an idiot and a noob. sorcs can't have it until level 8 at the very earliest.

as far as your question goes, bring around whatever you need to keep yourself alive. don't worry too much about the rest of your party, you don't really need them anyway.

Very few things that a Sorc should be 'expected' to bring to the party.

Haste is one, and IMO should be the first spell of that level you take. It makes things go a lot smoother overall, and IMO is better than the mass aggro inducing fireball.

Otherwise, let the Bard, Wizard, Cleric, and/or Potion Vendor take care of the buffs for the party. Once you are higher level you will want to take Blur, Stoneskin, Jump, Displacement (maybe), Heroism and/or Greater Hero, but for yourself. You will have lots of manna so feel free to drop them on needy party members, and it never hurts to Stoneskin the Cleric, builds good relationships.

On my sorcs I take a very laid back approach. I usually only kill the trash mobs when I am bored, preferring to let the melee take them out, with some CC assistance if needed. I am more than happy to run along behind, hasting as needed, CC as needed, allowing the party to clear the way for me to the end boss, who I will kill.

I like this approach on a sorc.. I think it works well especially at low levels (heightened web and haste take care of alot of mobs). This strategy also fits in well with my favorite first 2 feats to grab on a sorc (heighten, and extend)... other sorcs might take max and empower at these levels but I find that just burns SP to quickly. (of course by the time you get to higher levels max and empower are fine to keep turned on most/all of the time).

also, resist energy wands are nice to haves

The spellcaster is special in the way its ressources works.
You are very powerfull, able to take out entire crowds. But your power is limited by your SPs, contrary to a fighter who can swing all day.

So, you main job is to make fights easier when needed.
My advice is: Haste the party, and do nothing for 2 or 3 fights.
If the group kills everything real fast, you dont actually need to do anything. Wait for harder stuff. Seriosuly, you do NOT have to participate in every fight.

If the group struggles with defense (mobs die fast, but a lot of healing is needed) then assist with crowd control.
If the group struggle with offense (mobs die slow) then help with damage.

Stoen skin wands are handy because stoneskin IF you get it as a skpell will NOT be one of the first 2 4th elvle spells you get, it will be 4th imo if you have it... the wands can be bought in the 12 and used at elvel 7 even if your not yet able to use levle 4 spells...
MOSTLY you will onyl use it on your SELF to save the cleric SP, BUT you can use them on other party members right before big boss fights where you know the tank is gona take a POUNDING preventing 70 damage 10 at a time makes the clerics life a LOT easyer at that level.

Other wise what others have said highten WEB/Hyipnotism + haste will make groups at that level very happy to have you.

There's a thread around here that talks about a good spell set.

Carry enough healing supplies to keep you healthy, that's about what you need at low levels.

Don't worry about getting rejected because of spell selection - I've been rejected because at different times I didn't have web, glitterdust, all the various symbol spells etc etc.
Thanks for the long time forum user purge of Aug '10 (Sarcasm for those who don't get it)
