Default people REALLY need to learn to read

honestly, not everyone is going to be using voice chat in game to communicate
READ people READ! you never know when you're going to miss one of those "who wants free [insert uber gear]?!" in party chat!
PS: Greensteel RUINED the game! and you all know it!

I agree that people should probably read party chat to avoid missing something typed into party chat.

Sorry Jay i dont think they can read the forums either, this is a wasted message. Perhaps you could put up an LFM offering to teach people how to read. You could even start a channel for people who need to 'learn to read'.

It is good message but a waste of your effort.

I've found that most actually can read, its whether or not they choose to exercise this ability that is the real problem.

i read the chat window. its a lot better if you send your friendly party leader a tell message stating you dont have voice chat/or chat is turned off. so he can inform the rest of the party so everyone keeps a eye on the chat window.
sorry i understand that you should not have 2 go to the extream. thats just the way it is and saves eveyone involved a lot of pain.

IMO, party chat is just fine for general talking. For during combat, however, you'd better follow Boldrin's advice if you want to make sure you're heard in a PUG.

I disagree. I think people really should learn to read.

    battle chat is one thing
telling people to hold off on finishing the quest to wait for someone is another
especially sad since 4/6 of the party read it, confirmed it IN VOICE CHAT, and that 1/6 of the party still fail to grasp the message

    Mix of both for me.

As we can't controll individual volume, there are times when I have to go "off ears" just due to non-stop, and sadly, not very funny, chatter.

    The Cleric wont stop talking
    The Fighter has been drinking
The Rogue is showing off his gear
and the Wizard's mic is clinking

Hot mic, hot mic, the Monk lets out a screach
Hot mic, hot mic, like a Ceti-Alpha ear leach

    The Cleric is now complaining
    The Fighter has passed out
The Rogue has blown another trap
and the Wizard starts to spout

Hot mic, hot mic, the Monk has been affected
Hot mic, hot mic, time to fake a dis-connected

You were BORN with eyes, use them!

I have a mic, and have used it for the last 2.5 years.

Unfortunately, due to moving country, the time difference means I am playing when my kids are awake. I have the common decency not to expose 5 or 11 other people to the insanity in which I live.

Please have the courtesy to read the chat window, it's no excuse to be watching the combat readout to see your uber last crit - nobody cares.

sorry folks, this totally has got nothing to do with text or voice chat. i've been in shrouds where the lead says someone is going out, i spam 4 or 5 lines of text "do not attune altar" but there will still be some people who cant listen or read and finish it when people just took the dd

it has nothing to do with being an accident. some people assume all will finish, others are just a prick. to attune the altar, one has to run near to it and use the backspace to select or to move the mouse over and target it. calling is an accident is bullsh1t

as for pricks, i was in a shroud where 2 members were constantly arguing with each other. when 1 decide to not complete, the other attune the altar the moment the dd was taken. accident? no, he was the only one anywhere near the altar

there are also players that assume people will finish the quest. some also assume that if people wants to leave, they will state it before hand. however, in my experience there are people who are undecided or may be checking for their larges while doing so. 1 more min aint gonna kill anyone
If you want to know why...

I have a mic, but I don't use it, ever.

I have five kids, who are always making noise. Last weekend, while I was playing, I had my oldest two playing electric guitars together in the basement, and the next oldest two playing violin and piano together, and the youngest running around with a tambourine helping each duet out at the same time. If I tried to talk in those circumstances, you would just hear a loud, disjointed noise. I don't mind it, am used to it, and enjoy my kids working and playing together. I also have no misunderstandings about how other people view my herd of kids making a ton of noise, so I don't use my mic. Sometimes they are playing Wii three feet behind me, sometimes they are playing hockey in the basement, always they are loud.

I also don't use my mic because once the kids are in bed, when I am talking in game my wife looks up from whatever she is doing and says, 'What was that, dear?' Sometimes in a PUG that can be problematic, especially if I am not being super nice and she thinks I am talking to her.

Also, I sometimes turn other peoples voice off because they are swearing and my younger kids are right nearby, including my youngest (4) who has his plastic sword and shield or bow and is helping daddy kill the monsters. I don't care what kind of language you use, he once asked his mother what '*******' meant and I paid for that, believe me. I don't expect you to PG your language, but I will squelch you, not in a mean way but just until my kid goes to bed, or downstairs. I may miss out on some important communication, but thats the chance I take.

So there are valid reasons for not using a mic. I am sure that there are more out there than these ones. Please be respectful of peoples decisions to not use a mic, and keep an eye on party chat. You don't have to type your response, but you should keep an eye on the communications of other party members.

I don't even have combat on any of my chat windows. I watch the things that are visibly in front of me, like whatever I need to kill. and if the background is an issue thats what push to talk is for, you can speak when needed, and keep people from listening to background noise. I personally like to breathe heavily into the mic the whole quest and make people wonder what I'm doing I understand people don't want to use mic for whatever reason, but anyone who runs with me knows I look at party chat once every 5 mins or so, if that, lol. and I NEVER type directions, if a person can't hear me I'll act like we're shortmanning and just hope they don't mess up too much,.
