First, consider asking follow-up questions to any suggestions to make sure they take hirelings into account. The addition of hirelings turned the idea of what a good solo build is on it's head. Many people have not adjusted yet.
The only hirelings that seem to be able to actually keep themselves out of trouble (IMO) are the caster types... Clerics, sorcs, and Wizards.
My favorite build for solo these days would be a ranger... Splash of pally and/or fighter is optional. The main thing is put enough into STR so you can do damage when you hit. If you don't pally splash, you should be able to have an awesom STR and still have some points for CON. If you pally splash for saves and LOH, you need to put some into CHA to make it worth it.
Then, bring a Wiz or Cleric hireling for buffs and/or haste. Use of a hireling is a skill though... It'll suck until you learn the ins and outs of it. But it will make your solo game WAY better once you figure out how to get them to do useful stuff without constant supervision.
Good Luck.
