    Default BRAND NEW to DDO

Hello everyone. I don't usually do this but I need a lot of help :P. Like the title says im brand spanking new to DDO. never touched pen and paper either. I saw the trial and decided to try it and I loved the customization of the classes. I played WoW for 4 years and I just cant stand it anymore. Also played LotRO and I wasnt too impressed. But DDO blew me away. Well anyways I was hoping to find someone nice enough to help me in game to kinda have patience and teach me the ins and outs of this game. Im a fast learner. This is the build im going with and i apologize if this isnt the place. But this might show you how much help I need.

I went with this build so I could solo to 400 favor and 1750 favor. I went for evasion for less damage and open lock so I could open doors. fighter for heavy armor and extra feat and barbarian for dps. Thank you for your time and my name is Denox in game. Im not much of a roleplayer but I respect the games roots and will try my best. Thanks a lot guys.

scrap any kind of complex build like this until you unlock 32 point build. go with one of the templates developed by turbine. after you get more experience and unlock 32 point build then roll a more complex character.

I am sure there is plenty of good 28 point builds on the forums just do a little research. But its important to remember that some of the more complex builds on here are designed to be 32 point builds with 1 or more stat tombs at level 1 something you will probably not have access to for quite some time.

Not trying to discourage you just give you a more realistic goal as a beginner to DDO. Welcome and good luck!

    Default Try this...

U say u want to solo to 400, I would suggest grouping with pugs or at least using a hireling or 2 to keep you healed.

I would go with these for the base of your build:

Str - 16 (you can still get good DPS from this)
Dex - 13 (this way you won't limit yourself from getting Combat Expertise if wanted later AND your reflex saves are based off this stat)
Con - 16 (Hitpoints are your friend AND your Fortiude saves are based off this)
Int - 10 (You will get more Skill Points at creation, and you won't have a -1 at each level)
Wis - 8 + whatever is left, one point I believe (This is what you will saves shall be based off of)
(You may even want to reduce Str to 15 as you WILL come by some Str tomes, by level 9 or so - if not send me a tell - I will give you one, so you can bump Wis to 10)
    Cha - 8

Definately start rogue for the additional base multipliers to Skill Points awarded at creation.

DO NOT invest in Jump - EVER... Most mages keep this spell handy and that will be all you ever need. If you are worried about damage from falling, invest in Tumble.

Max out Intimidate and Diplomacy (Diplo items are more affordable, so if you have to choose - go Intimidate).

Search is also valuable, as if you can't find the trap, you cannot disable it.

    Disable Device, again valuable.

Lockpicking, yep invest here as well.

Hold off on the addition of Fighter levels because you may want to have (at endgame) a 18 Barbie/2 Rogue.

Just because you are a Barbie/Rogue, does not mean you can't wear heavy armor, it just means you take a small decrease to hp and such - but by that time, you will know more and will have access to better gear and such that it will be a moot point.

Hope this helps & one other thing - don't waste your Feats on Two Weapon Fighting until you are near the cap (16 currently, 20 sometime in the future) the other Feats available (i.e. Toughness/Khopesh/Luck of Heroes/Two Hand Fighting and Greater Two Hand Fighting/ etc, etc) will be more useful to you.

    Take care - J

Aranticus- I started a dwarven footman and so far hes pretty strong. I like him but I wasnt sure if he was going to be good enough to rush to unlock drow and 32pt builds.

Justan- Wow thank you for the advice. I will certainly go back and change some things around. I was wondering though, isnt intimidate a tank only skill? Im not much of a tank mindset.

Thank you so much for the replies so far. Im glad to see friendly people. Thank you for welcoming me you guys.

I forgot to mention, im a big fan of dual wielding and elven characters, but since i have read that all dual wielding builds need atleast 32pts and be str based, i wanted to quickly unlock the 32pts.

    Welcome to DDO.

You may be new to DDO, but obviously a vet at MMO's. That's a very nice build for a DDO first timer.

One thing to keep in mind is the break points for prestige enhancements are at levels 6, 12 and 18. You'd need 18 levels of barb to get the barb tier 3 prestige enhancement.

Just make a Pure Dwarven Strength Tempest Ranger and you'll be uber.

Welcome to the game Denox. If you need any help on Argo send me a tell, usually on Lakedaemon, Barakade, Meraxes or any Arkade type names.

One correction about Combat Expertise, your Int needs to be 13.

Rangers and Paladins are both good builds suited for solo play early on. If you intend to grind out the 400 favor to unlock Drow and roll with it, Rogue 2 paly 4 or until you hit 400 favor would get you by. Evasion, Saves, and Heal wands and Lay on Hands which will save you some, esp. just starting out.

    Could look something like this:
    Dwarf
    Str 16
    Dex 13
Con 12 (*difference between 12 and 16 at level 6 is 12 hit points)
    Int 11
    Wis 10
    Cha 12

You could follow same point spread with Ranger, but swap Cha and Wis.

After you roll up your Drow I don't think you'll look back until you hit 1750 favor.

    Hope this helps.

*Drows are fine for dual wield BTW

I went with this build so I could solo to 400 favor and 1750 favor. I went for evasion for less damage and open lock so I could open doors. fighter for heavy armor and extra feat and barbarian for dps. Thank you for your time and my name is Denox in game. Im not much of a roleplayer but I respect the games roots and will try my best. Thanks a lot guys.
One thing to remember...you will lose evasion if you use heavy armor. Not a bad initial build though personally I would hate not being able to find or disable any traps...opening locked doors really isnt a major deal to finish most quest (usually just an extra chest or optional. Traps on the other hand can be a ***** esp when you will be depending on potions to heal yourself. Only thing I might change is try to put a couple of points into int---so you will have a search and disable skill.

Thanks for the compliments on the build guys, i told ya im a fast learner . I will try that build also ollathir, is that for lvl 1 and 2 ranger then paladin to level 4, or pure paladin?

GeneralDiomedes-i read that is a good solo class, but im the worst caster in the world. im a melee type person. ive played almost every MMO known to man but i can never do a caster. im just too melee oriented.

Darkrhavyn-Wow thanks a lot. I did not know about the heavy armor and evasion. Do you think i should swap out the fighter levels then or keep them?

You will also lose evasion in medium armor. It only works in light or no armor.

    Welcome to the game.

You will not be able to solo to 1750. That's a huge portion of the content of the game. Frankly, I wouldn't even solo to 400...this game, while solo is possible, was designed for groups. The strength of this game is in grouping, I urge you to start grouping right away. I resisted at first too, but the game truely becomes the most fun in groups.

    Default 28

For what it's worth, I completely disagree there. Don't forget that most of the player base doesn't truly optimize builds. I don't have a ton of play time and I like to start newbies, so I haven't unlocked 32-point builds even after 2+ years in the game. But because I optimize the krap out of my builds, I find I usually have MUCH better bottom-line numbers (e.g. Saves, AC, damage output) than similar 32-point builds. Those extra 4 points are a luxury, but even builds with very broad stat needs AND starting-stat penalties (such as my WF Rogue/Paladin/Fighter) can be made very effective with 28 points.

And for a dual-wield STR build, the 32-points are even LESS critical. Darrea is such a build and starting at STR 17/DEX 16/CON 15 (all else tanked) is just fine. I have no problem leading in kills vs. 32-point builds .

Don't get me wrong: 32 points is strictly better than 28 points (duh!). But it's not the difference between a good build and a bad one -- THAT difference happens at design time.

In particular, a 28-point build just has to be VERY cautious about taking 17's and 18's. These eat major points. The converse of that is that to get from 17 to 18 eats 3 of the 4 "extra" points of a 32-point build, so the difference between a 28 and a 32-point build is often 1 point on your primary stat and one point on a stat that is nice-to-have.

    Don't believe the hype!
