Hehe, nah... labs are bred to be pretty much waterproof. They have two coats of fur, the inner one consists of small, thin hairs that provide insulation. The outer coat has thick, flat, tightly-packed hair that is somewhat oily (think along the lines of well-conditioned hair). The shape/layout of the hair, combined with the oils, acts like a thick layer of rain-X. Water simply sheets off them.
I'll try to snap some pictures of the dogs pulling ice sheets out of the pond - it's quite a funny process to watch.
If you want to know why...
Strakln's response... priceless. Anyway, as leader it ain't your fault and if you had new folks w/ you on the raid who <br>

My labs first duck hunting trip in the Ruby mountains. They're both yellow labs and conditioned to the desert. I think I'd kill a black lab out here on dove opener. Due to the heat and their coat and coat color. 115 degrees by 9:00 A.M. is brutal on a black lab so we've always had yellows they have a slightly different coat that doean't hold as much heat.
Anyway I brought them to the Ruby mountains in Jan. for a hunting trip one year. Never been there and a guy I met offered to take me. Mind you this is still Nevada so I'm assuming it can't be that cold. I couldn't have been more wrong. This guy takes me to his hunting spot on a wildlife refuge. It's basically frozen tundra with little 2 ft. deep ponds all over the place. So we lay out the decoys in one of the little ponds. Mind you first we had to break apart the ice to do so. The blinds are right in the pond. The dogs had always hunted in Socal on the Salton Sea or the Co. river. They had no clue what was going on except that I had a shot gun so there must birds somewhere.
Now they're standing in water up to their chest in some places with chunks of ice floating around them & me waiting for birds to fly by. They're like dad *** are you thinking? This way too F-ing cold to be fun. They were constantly lifting one foot off the ground, or out of the water to try and warm it up. I'm freezing my ass of in my blind in the water. Me and the dogs are looking at each other like this isn't hunting this is crazy borderline suicide. So 2 hours of this **** and no wind, so no birds flying, and I tell this guy lets call it a day.
We get back to this little cabin & I'm like there's no way I'm going out and doing that **** again tomorrow nor am I gonna put my dogs thru that. Where we hunt for duck & geese we just wear camo pants & a camo tee-shirt. This freezing stuff is crazy.
So I make up a story that The Beergirl got in an accident so I had to head back to Las Vegas so I wouldn't hurt the guys feelings. He was so proud of his hunting grounds and the birds that were there. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the place sucked compared to SoCal on the Co. river and on the Salton Sea. Where you can get a limit of both ducks and geese W/O freezing your ass off in like 3 hours.
The ride home was tough. Two dogs looking at me like what are you thinking. Don't ever do that sh*t again or you can swim and get your own birds after you shoot them.
Well there's the problem right there. For some reason, you're reading my post as "laughing at someone else". If there's one thing I've learned from playing DDO, it's that different cultures often have issue understanding each others humor.
Since it is obviously not clear to you, the only "person" I'm poking fun at would be "Khyber Forum Goers"... meaning, at least partially, myself. The post as a whole expresses empathy with the player who was shorted two chests.
In the future, if you don't understand the humor of a poster from a vastly different locale than yourself, I recommend asking for clarification instead of whatever you're doing now. Considering your profession, I'm rather surprised you took the route you did. I'll chalk it up to a bad day.
LOL, awesome story. It's funny how labs can really communicate that exact line... I saw "the look" myself just this past weekend. Directed the dogs towards a pine I figured some birds might be hiding under, but there were some briar bushes between us and the tree. Izzie (the younger black one) flopped right on her belly and started wriggling through, but Abby - who has a much stockier build and can't get through like Izzie does - gave me "the look", snorted, and walked up the path.
Yeah, in that kind of heat my dogs would find the nearest body of water and refuse to get out until it cooled down. I'd probably be doing the same

look from it from the pov of the guy who got shafted. someone who has just been aggrieved will not be able to see past that humor. this is empathy. empathy is not "yeah i'll put something humorous to cheer him up". the funny stuff can come after he gets over his initial grief
this is why i'm in my profession

Ok so you are a shrink? So no wonder you seem to at times fail to grasp humor or sarcasm and almost always assume that your opinion is the only right opinion. Yes empathy is at times putting up a humorous post. Life isnt black and white. It tends to be a nice shade of grey. I find humor of any kind tends to be the best way to break up a foul mood or shift and distract a person when they are white in the fist and shaking with anger fear or both. I like straks post. Its the same kind of humor I have used time and time again in a combat zone to get smiles, and break tension you could cut with a knife. You wont find that in a text book btw. That comes from life xp.
As far a Disavowed goes this post simply speaks to the str and caliber of his char.
Yeah I haven't played much. Kinda got out of the habit being away for so long and never got back into it.
*tsks at Arkat* Don't be jealous...you'll find yourself that elusive first girlfriend. Try internet dating...then use a picture of Brad Pitt that's fuzzy and hope they don't notice....heh
I was actually thinking about trying out the next quests this Saturday so I may be around.
As for the Disavowed, I've had this happen to me. I was quite unhappy about it at the time. I'll send one large to Gryhm, through you. I'll look at what I've got and give you something the next time I see you.
My generosity stems from Strakeln who showed me that even in dark times there is a reason to smile...

I suppose we'll have to agree to see things differently. I do think this is a cultural difference between you and I regarding appropriate use of humor. Where I'm from, humor is used to diffuse almost any situation, especially ones like this that matter so little when viewed from proper perspective.
Some examples from my culture:
- Lord_of_Rage mentioned using humor to alleviate tension in a combat zone. It doesn't get much more serious than that, yet humor is often the best tool to help ease fears/tension/etc.
- Eulogies at American funerals typically invoke humorous stories about the deceased. Some cultures might feel this is crass or rude, but in the States, it's a way of remembering what made the deceased so important to the family and friends.
- My grandmother suffered from Alzheimers for years. My family made the best of the situation by finding the humor in it... such as when she would "whisper" (in a LOUD voice) questions like "WHOSE BIRTHDAY IS IT?" (on Easter).
Given the relative insignificance of this situation, I'd say humor is absolutely applicable. It is unfortunate that your perception of my intent is so vastly incorrect, I hope this clarifies some things for you.
I completely agree with strak here. I find that people in your culture tend to look at things very different. Your family dynamic, the way males are treated vs females, and humor. I have seen several people not get the humor strak myself and others tend to employ.
A good story is my dads best friend broke his arm in a motorcycle accident. We gave him ****. Lots of it. We found a toy motorcycle and mounted training wheels on it, and using it as a table center piece for xmass dinner. He slugged my old man hard. In my family if we dont joke around or mess with you we dont like you. My first sargent said the same thing once. "rage if I dont f**k with you I dont like you." I got screwed with alot.
As for humor in combat. It is one of the best ways to break tension bar none. You run such a fine edge and high stress is everyday. When you see your people suffer you crack jokes or set up pranks. My master sgt made up a thing about pigme sandbats. He also gave my one of my officers a brieing that isreal had laser cannons and force shields to use on hezbolah. But I do truely think it could be a cultural difference.
I guess you missed this in the "See who you're talking to...KHYBER!" thread.

Try again.
If this happened to me i would appreciate the post from Strak.
Funny stuff.
Not to many people here seem to be taking offense to straks post, in fact i think it may only be you Aranticus.
All through history there are stories of great people standing up to the masses, stating what they believe to be true, and in the fullness of time being proven correct.
This is not one of those times.

Bravely bold Aranticus rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die,
O brave Aranticus.
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Aranticus!
He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out and his elbows broken,
To have his kneecaps split and his body burned away
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Aranticus!
His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off
And his pen...
Aranticus: That's... that's... er... enough music for now lads.
Looks like there's dirty work afoot.
On a note slightly off (strake) topic, why haven't Shroud groups started throwing GT instead of DD at the end? Seems like less of a chance of people taking the DD, and someone seeing them go and hitting the altar before they actually step out of the quest.
Sure, there is the random guy who'll try to send you to the Twilight Forge , but that is not as bad a fate as missing 2 chests and being on timer for 3 days.
