Default New player need healing Cleric advice

New to the game. I mainly have played PvP games in the past but wanted to try out DDO and liking it so far. I have a level 5 cleric and so far have really focused on healing and buffing in big fights. I always seem to run out of Spell points especially in elite mode.

I guess my question is what spells should I be using to make my group better and is there anything I can do to better manage my spell points? I'm looking for a noob cleric guide I guess to kinda show me how to spec each level till 16 maybe?

    Thanks.

You're at level 5. Buffs shouldn't be too bad.

    Aids, Mass (Level 3 spell)
Protection from Evil, Mass (Level 3 Spell)
Remove Fear (Optional) (Level 1 Spell)

In spots where required (Think STK Fire Trap), throw Resist Energy.

If you took Extend Spell, Extend Spell will increase the cost by 10 SP, but also double the duration of the spell. For a first level spell, this means you don't lose any SP, and don't gain any mileage. However, as you gain higher and higher spells, Extend saves you spell points. (Aids, Mass will cost 20 SP to cast regularly, 20 SP again to cast it twice. However, extending it will only cost 30 SP, which means you have saved 10 SP).

One thing to watch out for since you are new--Is veteran groups that run Elite content 3 - 5 levels higher than than their characters--while these groups can level you fast, a 5th lvl cleric just doesn't have the same SP pool as a 9 th level cleric--Many of these groups will not know that you are new to the game, and will just assume that you have money for Wands, and later on scrolls. But, many of these groups can self heal as well. When I was leveling, if I joined a group like this ( lol or ran one) I always let them know that I had 40 heals in me and that was it and they should top themselves off between fights.

You can look at the level of the quest before joining, and this might help you stretch your SP pool. There ar eso many quests in this game now, it seems that you could level without having to do elite quest too much higher than your level--however most powergamers will skip these and just go for the quick, big XP quests.

You could also get the Tangleroot Trinket which would some SP. When you get to Lvl 9 you can get a Pearl of Power too.

If you don't use Crowd Control, you could try Soundburst which will hit all mobs, and Hold Person for individual mobs as well as commnad--this should cut down on melee taking damage.

use wands to supplement your sp casting, cure moderate wands give a good bang for your buck and can be purchased in the marketplace

Certainly an effective way of managing your spell points is alternating the use of a wand with a spell, as well as asking party members to "top themselves off" after a big fight so you aren't wasting your spell points on minimal heals.

I see others giving tips on mana management. So I'll address the other side of the coin. Party build and quest choice are going to have a huge effect on how much mana is needed.

Paladins, Rangers, and some Rogues can heal themselves to a limited extent to help you save your mana for the times when they are in battle and too busy. And they still put out pretty good damage. Wizards can shut down damage with spells like Web, etc. A high AC fighter (or any high AC class) is especially hel;pful at lower levels in reducing damage.

On the other hand, there are quite a few builds out there with low AC, low saves, and very high damage. If you build a party with some (or even one) of these, it is going to suck your mana dry. People will make arguments for how these classes are valuable, etc. And some of those arguments have merit. But the bottom line is, most people play those characters because they find them really fun and/or because they haven't yet figured out how to get both high damage and high defence. Often that fun comes at the expense of your mana (and money if you buy scrolls and wands).

Aside from party build, there are also plenty of quests that are disproportionally difficult. "Proof is in the poison" for example, is level 4. But many level 4 groups have trouble with it. On the other hand, "Stormcleave Outpost" can be done without too much difficulty by level 4 characters even though it is a level 8 quest. One of Turbine's weaknesses is their consistancy withy quest difficulty ratings. It's just something you have to learn as you go.

In any event, just pick quests that are lvl 5 or lower and do them on normal. Your mana will last a lot longer. If you try harder quests for the extra challenge, you should expect to... well... have extra challenge. This includes using more spell points.
