Default Sorceror versus Wizard - Which is best ?

I know that Wiz's can make scrolls into spells and Sorc's are supposed to be able to throw spells faster, but what are the advantages ? They both are casters and can use the same spells, so why do we have two types ?

Sorcerors are more potent in their specialty (usually nuking/instakill), but wizards are more versatile.

The general view seems to be that sorcerors are more powerful, which is true if you only look at killing potential, but in recent end-game raids, I've found that wizards are often more useful for the party as a whole due to the ridiculous hitpoint and immunity inflation of end-game mobs.

The primary advantages of the Wizard are lessened by the fact that we have too small a pool of Metamagic Feat and "useful" Spells

Increase those and they come out a little closer. But because Sorcerors can get all or at least most of the useful Spells and Feat as well as havea Spell Point Pool roughly 1.5 times the Wizard and casts spells faster than the wizard currently the Sorceror would qualify as "better"

I must like the underdogs though as I perfer to play Wizards

If I'm going into a quest that has never ever been done before and there could be anything around any corner and I'm playing Perma-Death and the recall button is greyed out I'd say a wizard.

For every other situation Sorceror is head n shoulders above their counterparts.

Wizards can know every spell, and can prepare a larger list of spells at any given time (per rest). Wizards learn their spells from scrolls, and get to choose 2 per level for free.

Sorcerers have fewer spells known, but have a larger mana pool and cast much faster. Their spells also reset their timers for recast much quicker.

Since DDO doesn't have nearly as many spells as PNP, I think the benefits that sorcerers get makes them more powerful, which some may equate to better.

Wizards are more diverse and can tailor their spells to a specific enemy or situation which makes them quite valuable.

As a personal choice, I would make a sorcerer. As a party lead, I would recruit both to cover the bases.

I'd even go further and make a WF sorc due to the benefits.

Personally I prefer the Sorc, mainly due to the reduced cooldown times on spells.

That said, there's a bunch of scrolls that Sorcs pretty much need to carry at endgame that Wizzies can do without - GH (unless they sacrifice a level 6 spell slot for it, that's hard to do), GT, Reconstruct and in many cases Waves of Exhaustion.
    I don't have a zerging problem.

    I'm zerging. That's YOUR problem.

I prefer wizard due to being able to have many more useful feats (though not nearly as many as we should have. where is my still spell?) and spells at any given time. But I prefer versatility. If you prefer specialization then sorcerer is a better fit for you. They get a much faster casting time and much shorter regeneration time, as well as 1.5 x sps (all of which is contrary to pnp). Also, sorcs may change a spell every 3 days (also contrary to pnp), and when new spells are released many scrolls are forgotten and so wizards get left out.

    Turbine prefers sorcs, do you?

    Default wizard all the way!

sorcerers do cast faster but not by much alot of people are saying much faster and it isnt by a significant figure, if a wizard has quicken the wizard will cast fast, sure a sorc w/ quicken casts faster but it is by an insignificant amount cuz both are casting a fire wall in less then a sec, but for things like acid fog the sorcs casting speed is significant but last time i checked many sorcs dont even have room to carry acid fog which IMO is a very handy spell, on my wizard i have all the enhancements for acid/electricity so on a crit my acid fog does a ton of damage, in abbot it was hitting for as much as 256 on a crit and slows down your enemies. But anyway 1765 mana for an efficient group should be enough and if not big woop the wizard has to drink 1 mana pot. I definatly have a bias since I play a wizard but seriously, I rather have an adaptable a versatile arcane rather then an arcane with a more mana but only spams the same spells over and over again. IMO a sorc is boring to play compared to a wizard which you can do much more with. I have found in the new content having to use some spells I had not used often such as ooze puppet, web and cloudkill, it was nice to be able to have all the necesary spells for a quest. Example Enter the KObald, those living spells can be annoying but awesome when you use ooze puppet and have em pwning the end bosses for you plus once the quest is over I get to swap it out for something that isnt useless in the next quest I do.

Heres a little list of what each class has that the other doesn't
    Wizards
    1. ability to change spells in taverns and after using rest shrines
    2. more spell slots
    3. more skill points
    4. higher reflex save (insightful reflexes)
    5. overall more versatile
    Sorcerers
    1. more mana
    2. cast 10% faster
    3. faster cool downs
    4. more umd
    5. higher will save (that is if your build has a spare feat for force of personality)

not all of these disadvantages and advantages are equal, I would say there r overall more pros to a sorc but some of the pros are not as useful

the pros i wld say that are not real important
    1. more skill points (wizard), what the heck do you spend 8 skill points or so per lvl on a wizard?
    2. cast 10% faster (sorcerer), oh dang! casting .1sec faster is key to success!
    3. more umd (sorcerer), umd is nice but my wiz still has 34, n a wizard can multi class 1 lvl of bard for umd w/o a big penalty n have 39+ umd easy
    4. higher will save (sorcerer), a wizard can easily get mid to high 20s for a will save which has your character saving most of the time however I would like to see a sorcerer get a reflex save in high 20s w/o dumping a ton into dex

This is just my opinion, to me it makes sense, for readers i have no clue, it could make absolutely no sense n make me look like a ******, for others it might be hey this guy is right n other some where inbetween.

Cant be answered as it depends on the situation and what your comparing sorcs cast faster and have more sp but wizzies much more flexible and more likely to be able to have the spell wanted for the given situation.

Depends heavily on the player, as well. A wizard's versatility is useless if played by a player who never switches spells. If you're the kind of player who's prefers to find a few spells that work well for you and stick with them for every quest, you'll be happier with a sorceror, as you won't be taking advantage of a wizard's strengths anyway.

On the other hand, if you're the kind of player who reviews their spells before every quest to make sure they've got just the right tools for the situation, you'd be happier with a wizard and the flexibility to switch spells out every quest, and even midquest (at shrines). A player like that with a sorc would get frustrated with having to carry around a packfull of wands and scrolls, and be losing out on the fast-casting advantages of the sorc by using them extensively.

Thanks to everyone for your inputs on Wiz versus Sorc. I have my Wiz (Shddwiz) up to level 5 now and am enjoying it. Maybe I will roll a Sorc and try it out after I finish with my Wiz.
