Default RP problem with hireling paladins

I've got a bit of an issue with the concept of a hireling paladin.

Paladins are sworn to the duty of their deity. Unless that deity is farming out his/her/its minions, they've got no business taking work for someone else.

    Holy warrior != mercenary
Suggestion to Turbine: Have new character slots open up automatically based on months since account start date.
Update: EU+Store = close enough. Thank you.

What if you are a follower of the diety Gordonis Geckois? Then I'd say it's highly appropriate...

Don't use them. More options are never a bad thing, if it interferes with your definition of gaming simply don't use said option. As a RP you can pretend you are an elven wizard I doubt it'd be much of a stretch to pretend paladin hirelings don't exist.

Ok then, you're not "hiring" them, but rather you're "donating" to their church for their "assistance" in combating EVIL.
    Problem solved.
It's pretty simple to RP their existence IMO.

The only reason I would get a paladin hireling, is to entertain myself with different creative ways of watching their demise.

I know a couple people who would probably make that their entertainment of the week once the hirelings come out for real.

The Eberron Campaign Setting does not have what can be considered "deities."

Eberron clerics/paladins/etc. worship ideas or concepts in most cases.

There's no reason a paladin cannot be a mercenary in this campaign.

    From the srd:

    Code of Conduct
A paladin must be of lawful good alignment and loses all class abilities if she ever willingly commits an evil act.

Additionally, a paladin’s code requires that she respect legitimate authority, act with honor (not lying, not cheating, not using poison, and so forth), help those in need (provided they do not use the help for evil or chaotic ends), and punish those who harm or threaten innocents.

    Associates
While she may adventure with characters of any good or neutral alignment, a paladin will never knowingly associate with evil characters, nor will she continue an association with someone who consistently offends her moral code. A paladin may accept only henchmen, followers, or cohorts who are lawful good.

What about that suggests that they can't be a gun for hire? Assuming that they are working to destroy evil and to bring order to the land, it seems appropriate to me. Now if we had "evil" characters allowed and were allowed to quest to destroy good (I know, two quests in the game we do that) then it would be different, but generally speaking everything we do is within the pali code of conduct.

Wow. Maybe you should RP a little harder and pretend this doesn't bother you.
