Semper Fi!!!
Bekki
Former Sgt of Marines 1986-2007
And for those who ask Why
Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty Puller
is not on this list...
He IS "Chesty" Puller... Need I really say More?...![]()
The Top 10 Reasons to Love the Corps:
1. Cpl. Jason Dunham.
First Marine to receive the Medal of Honor
since Vietnam. If jumping on a grenade to save a buddy isn't
worth the top of the list, nothing is.
2. Sgt. Rafael Peralta.
Like Dunham, he hugged a grenade to save his
buddies in Iraq. No Medal of Honor ... yet.
3. Navy Lt. Vincent Capodanno, Medal of Honor recipient.
If Marines have a hot line to heaven, Father Capodanno
- aka the "Grunt Padre" - would take the call.
His body peppered by shrapnel, his right hand nearly severed,
the Navy chaplain and priest crisscrossed a Vietnam battlefield Sept. 4, 1967,
to render last rites to his fallen Marines and corpsmen with 3rd Battalion,5th Marines,
until 27 rounds from an enemy machine gun took his life.
In 2006, the Vatican declared him a "Servant of God."
Next step, sainthood?
4. Gen. Peter Pace, the first Marine Chairman of the Joint Chiefs.
He left his four-star insignia with his fallen comrades at the
Vietnam Wall when he retired. Classy move.
5. Cpl. Gareth Hawkins.
Lying on a stretcher after an IED shattered
his leg, demanded re-enlistment before medical evacuation.
And got it.
6. The Montfort Point Marines.
The first African-American Marines know a
little something about honor, courage and commitment.
These dedicated Marines trained in a little out of the way base
on the Base on the back side of Camp Lejune, NC.
Paved the Way not for Equality in the Marine Corps…
But for ALL of the Armed Forces. Semper Fi! Marines!!!
7. John Lovell.
A 71-year-old former Marine is sitting in a Subway
restaurant when two armed men try to rob the place. Lovell grabs his .45,
kills one and wounds the other.
No word on how Lovell's sandwich fared.
8. Maj. Gen. Marion E. Carl.
The Corps' first fighter ace. First Marine to fly a helicopter.
Winner of Two Navy Crosses, five Distinguished Flying Crosses, 14 Air Medals.
In 1998, the 82-year-old was killed during a home break-in
when he jumped in front of a shotgun blast aimed at his longtime wife, Edna.
9. Cookies Tavern:
A little out of the way place in Philadelphia, PA.
The owner; Retired Marine Msgt James “Daddy Wags” Wagner
Led the charge and Opened his tavern up to a host an Annual
Birthday Ceremony After the city of Philadelphia
announced they wanted to close and Demolish Tun Tavern...![]()
It has since grown so large, that they need to close down
an entire Section of Oregon Ave in South Philadelphia!
Sadly we Lost “Daddy Wags" Several years ago,
but his Children still carry on the tradition today…
10. Brig Gen Walter S. "Tabasco Mac" McIlhenny.
Served in WW11, earning the Navy Cross, & Silver Star, just to name a few.
His grandfather invented Tabasco sauce, and when Walt took over the co in 1949,
he marketed it into a household name.
No MRE (or C-Rat), was complete without Tabasco Sauce.
11. Honorable Mention:The National Marine Corps Historical Association
The National Marine Corps Historical Association
is currently raising money to have the Tun Tavern
restored and relocated to “Penn’s Landing” in Philadelphia…
After All What would Philadelphia Be without “Tun Tavern”…
Happy Birthday Marines!!!
