I cannot spell English words correctly, you want me to spell Hawai'ian? After five years I still cannot get verbal directions from a local. I'm an idiot when it comes to languages.

Still many cannot fathom that KILAUEA is a active volcano you can walk on. Really, you can. THough not sure how much that view has changed this year.

I've met 2 Hawaiins in the Navy, the both told me never to ask directions in Hawaii...they will send you in the exact opposite direction, guaranteed.

And on a visit there, I asked a uniformed Mall security guard for directions to a theater.
And guess what?! He smiled, and sent me in the exact opposite direction.
When I finally found a theater it was very close to where I had asked him....he did that on purpose!

First, street names???!!!! We don't need no stinkin street names!!

That's how you do local directions!

Or even better...

"K, you know [inset somewhat well known place here]? K, go past that heading mauka and look for the sign that says "Ricky's Birthday" and then follow the signs, cannot miss it!"

If anyone living on Oahu (OAHU ) needs directions, I'd be happy to help! (Of course, being born and raised doesn't mean I actually know how to get anywhere!)

Oh, and my boyfriend works at Pearl Harbor too (as a civilian contractor), maybe our men have crossed paths

Look on the bright side, you could live on Pohnpei, where locals give directions like this:

Go down there, turn down right at the coconut tree and go until you see a mango tree. That's when you turn up to the right and head over that way until you see a coconut tree. Turn down to the left and you'll see it.

In pohnpean, that's spoken like this:
