Default Downloading Mod 8 crashes computer

Ok, I have tried to download Mod 8 over 30 times since it went live. I connect to the site, everything looks great, it detects the new updates and asks if I want them. I click "Ok" and the little red bar starts humming along downloading packets... for about 1-3 minutes. Then the entire computer crashes to DOS.

I hoped tonight's update would fix it. When it came up I launched the game. It downloaded what must have been the new info from tonight's update. I thought I was golden. Then it detected the 1800ish packets for Mod 8. It started downloading those and about 30 seconds later crashed to DOS.

I have tried the clean boot recommended to others and it made no difference. I have turned off the firewall and it made no difference.

Any help, advice or even educated guesses would be great.
    Thank you,
    -Shane

I have to ask, what operating system are you running that still crashes to DOS?

Okay, exactly what happens when it crashes? What does the screen look like?

I can't take a screen shot as Windows is dead. It looks like a BIOS type screen. Black with white writing that lists my hardware. At the bottom it says, "Disk Boot failure." I can crash it again if the exact wording will help.

That sounds more like your hard drive is failing or some other hardware problem than any kind of update error. The exact error message may help. When it starts downloading, it starts hitting your harddrive fairly hard. In Windows, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools(It may be under Performance), and open up Event Viewer. Look under the System section and look for red exclamation points with a time stamp around the time of the crash. That might give you more information.

    Freeman,
Your help is much, much appreciated.

I just crashed it again to get the exact info. Note I have been playing on this computer since Mod 3 or 4 and spouse was on it all day today.

Click shortcut, get red dragon screen. "Getting Data Centers," "Opening Main Menu"

    Next screen comes up
    Connect (green check)
    examine program (green check)
    update program (green check)
    Examine Game Data (blinking diamond)

Usually it starts downloading but this time I did not even get past Examine Game Data.

Black Screen that says, Sony (Sony VAIO computer)

Black screen with white writing that lists PCI Devices
    at bottom
"Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter."

In event viewer it says (remember it just crashed)

Application Log Application Error Reco.... 512

    No red exclamations

When you get the Disk Boot Error, what do you have to do to get it to boot back up? Also, as a quick test, try defragmenting your C: drive.(Under My Computer, right-click, Properties, Tools, Defragment Now)

To get out of disk boot error I have to physically shut off the computer and restart. Will try defrag.

I'm mainly curious is some other disk activity will also trigger it. It sounds like something is completely restarting your computer, and afterwards it isn't able to find the hard drive. Powering down and then restarting seems to make it appear, but it sounds like there could be a serious hardware problem there. Most software crashes would take you to a blue screen first.

    Freeman,
Spouse defragged the hard drive today. I started the game. Got all excited as it looked good. It downloaded 40 "packets" and then computer crashed as before.

Nothing else causes this. Wife was gaming and on the internet all day. I came home checked e-mail, etc before trying to download the updates.

The ONLY thing associated with the computer crashing is attempting to download the new Mod 8 content.

Are there any work arounds (i.e. Can I elect to just play up to Mod 7 content until this issue is fixed)? Why have I been fine on this computer since about Mod 3 or 4 and now I am sunk?

    Thanks,
    -Shane

It really doesn't make any sense, did you try backing up the ddo folder you have, uninstall the game and reinstalling it?

    Altumus,
I appreciate the response. I have not tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Would that remove all the other Mod downloads to date? Here in South Africa we pay internet based on how many gigs we download per month. If I had to download all the Mods again it would cost me a small fortune. I would really like to avoid that if possible.

I am baffled as well as through Mod 7 I had no problems. The crashing problem only comes with attempting to download the update packets associated with Mod 8.

What I have tried to date:
    1) Clean boot before attempting download
    2) Turning off Zone Alarm before attempting download
    3) Defrag of hard drive

If Freeman is correct that it is hard drive issue... I have an external hard drive. Should I attempt to move the game to that drive? Would playing the game from an external hard drive be feasible?

    Thank you,

It is possible to play from the external, had to do this for about a month after having a sector on my main drive go bad...

    Thanks Stormanne,
Looks like transferring the game to my external drive will be my project today.

Just be careful with the setup on the external for the game. One wrong pathing instruction and the files become useless. Make sure you don't transfer and delete until you are absolutely sure its working...

Yes, That was the problem I ran into trying to move the game to my external drive. My last option at this point seems to be to uninstall the game and reinstall it on my main drive again. The complete DDO folder is 7.2 GB. This is going to cost me in both time and money if I do it.

I need to check my current rates as a download that size may be cost prohibitive. It is ok to absorb a few bucks with every new Mod, but all 8 at once? I am also estimating about 36-48 hours download time for all the Mods.

I really appreciate the efforts of those that have tried to help me.
