I can't get the game to run on my wifes computer. It's an Intel quad 6600, 4g ram, nvidia 9800, with Vista OS. When patching the game, it gets stuck on the "Getting alerts and news" screen. I tried the different ways already posted on the forums and it still doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

Telling us specifically what you tried would be helpful or else we may end up giving you repeat advice. First thing to do is if you are on a "non admin" vista account make sure uac is on and remove and readd the exceptions to the firewall for DDO.
