If it ends up being cheaper to recruit a hireling cleric than the average amount a player cleric would spend on a quest, then we may no longer see people playing that class. I guess it depends on how effective the hireling cleric is at healing.

"And if Bruce Dikinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell!"
Can't bring a hireling into raids where clerics are most essential..

Perhaps Mod 8 will bring an end to raids then too?

Even a hireling cleric will not be able to equip the best of raid and shroud items. This will certainly affect how well they heal and how they use their mana. I see it being great for short runs but as a zerger and as current pathing goes, I foresee a problems having them keep up. It will be closer to a newbie who doesn't know a quest trying to just keep up with the party let alone heal....
Given that clerics are one of the most powerful classes in the game, that is very unlikely.
Then, if you take into account that hirelings can get into raids...

A hireling also won't be able to make advanced tactical decisions like "It will cost me less SP in the long run if I let that idiot die and then carry his stone to the next shrine." that are sometimes necessary for the party's success. The hireling clerics will probably work fairly well in relatively easy content. I don't see them being able to handle the triage healing needed for when the stuff hits the fan and people are dropping like flies.

I can't wait to check these no concentration check ,firing blade barriers outa their arse's , unlimited sp healbots
Yes, Frenkle. Mod 8 will bring an end to Clerics, raids and the free world.
And you discovered it.
Let's face it, wouldn't the game be a tad better if party's felt themselves a little less dependent on clerics?
Have you seen the AI in this game...
It's nice that there will be a clericing option of last resort - but I really doubt they will replace the real thing. I'm just envisioning blade barriers being cast behind the hire-cleric and into the wall, heals hitting the wrong person, continue casting Hold Person on a held mob - etc.
I'm thinking this has novelty written all over it & it won't change the game an iota once the "hey look - something new and shiny" aspect has worn off.
Pretty new to this game but lotsa time on another unnamed game that instituted party NPC's - don't hold your breath on AI Clerics being even close to as effective as a player Cleric. It may look like a player Cleric, it may cast spells like a player Cleric but underneath it all, it's still AI.
The AI would have to really be better than anything I've seen before in DDO to make hirelings viable for anything higher than mid game.
I have always found it funny how some people have the assumtion that playing a cleric must be boring for everyone and that most if not all people who play clerics do so out of obligation to their guildies or friends or simply want to have a character who can get into a group anytime.
I have a couple clerics and leveling up my lastest one has been more fun than most of my other characters. I wouldn't have any problem with a hireling cleric in my party but I sure wouldn't want to depend on one for a tough quest.
I envision Coyle-esque behavior for the first couple of weeks...Casting blade barriers and comet falls at corners and trying its best to heal the mobs instead of the group...
I can´t wait to see the threads of angry Barbarians (are there any other kind) complaining that the Hireling Cleric won´t heal them enough....
Or the Wizling won´t haste!, And bard won´t sing tunes until the MOBS are dead and he prefers to sing songs of victory.......
