If it ends up being cheaper to recruit a hireling cleric than the average amount a player cleric would spend on a quest, then we may no longer see people playing that class. I guess it depends on how effective the hireling cleric is at healing.

"And if Bruce Dikinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell!"
Can't bring a hireling into raids where clerics are most essential..
Norg Fighter12/Paladin6/Monk2, Jacquiej Cleric18/Monk1/Wiz1, Rabiez Bard16/Ranger3/Cleric1, Hangover Bard L20, Boomsticks Fighter12/Monk 6/Druid 2, Grumblegut Ranger8/Paladin6/Monk6, Rabidly Rogue L20, Furiously Rogue10/Monk6/Paladin4, Snowcones Cleric 12/Ranger 6/Monk 2, Norge Barbarian 12/FVS4/Rogue4. Guild:Prophets of The New Republic Khyber.
Perhaps Mod 8 will bring an end to raids then too?

Even a hireling cleric will not be able to equip the best of raid and shroud items. This will certainly affect how well they heal and how they use their mana. I see it being great for short runs but as a zerger and as current pathing goes, I foresee a problems having them keep up. It will be closer to a newbie who doesn't know a quest trying to just keep up with the party let alone heal....
A hireling also won't be able to make advanced tactical decisions like "It will cost me less SP in the long run if I let that idiot die and then carry his stone to the next shrine." that are sometimes necessary for the party's success. The hireling clerics will probably work fairly well in relatively easy content. I don't see them being able to handle the triage healing needed for when the stuff hits the fan and people are dropping like flies.
Freeman - Human Bard - Thelanis Fulfilling my duty to the ladies of Stormreach
Yuvben(Halfling Rogue), Acana(Drow Sorcerer), Walket(Human Cleric), Mahoukami (WF Wizard), Knicapper(Horc Fighter), Pyetr(Human Bard), Mazinger (WF Barb), and Belcar(Halfling Ranger).
I can't wait to check these no concentration check ,firing blade barriers outa their arse's , unlimited sp healbots
Given that clerics are one of the most powerful classes in the game, that is very unlikely.
Then, if you take into account that hirelings can get into raids...
DDOwiki.com, #1 source for DDO information.
Probably not if you get my drift, but you can go here however to see that the armor is a set of new recipes released with Mod 8 which kinda indicates its more like ritual crafting than Shroud crafting but who knows.

I think the hirelings will be more like the party member of last resort.
Given the AI, it will be like filling out the party with someone who really plays below their reputed level (like a noob playing with their brother's toon).

Let's face it, wouldn't the game be a tad better if party's felt themselves a little less dependent on clerics?

Then it would no longer be Dungeons and Dragons. For as long as this game has been around; Clerics, have been 1 of 4 core classes that make this game. The others being magic-user(Wizards), fighter, and thieves(Rogue). They all help each other(in campaign where alignment matters and is well organized). Besides; you have options in DDO like UMD which allow you to cast spell's from scrolls, etc..That makes it even easier to heal a grp then original D n D. ps drink more potions, don t aggro as much, let the Rogue find traps and scout, wait for your team, etc to limit your damage.
I play in groups without clerics a lot already.
I also enjoy playing my cleric with my guild. As you see, they are adept at playing without a cleric, so I spend much of the time using crowd control spells and only healing occassionaly to reduce the wand cost.![]()
You made me chuckle Gene.
Have you paid attention to the AI lately? We were discussing this very subject today while we were in Madstone standing in front of the minos while the Seer was doing his shard breaking loin cloth dance...
So, unless they have made some kind of tremendous discovery in AI programming, I doubt Clerics will become obsolete.

I don't know how it will work in this game, but in guild wars the henchmen healers never do enough healing to a pc in the tough instances, as compared to a good human heal battery.
the ai in this game is horrendous at best, would you thrust your group's life in that AI?Asking the question is answering it.This thread oozes silliness.
Can't u see how poorly AI is designed so far? So definitely no.
