Still Using Quarterstaff?

I have a question for high-level strength monks. Are you still using quarterstaves at high levels or do you find that bare-hand works better?

Transmuting qs of pg, yes. Only for bosses, tho.

Am not exactly high level yet (8 monk/1 pal), but I tend to run back and forth depending on what the run is, really.. For something like Deleras Tomb I'm exclusively using a +4 flame darkwood pure good staff to take out the wraiths and shadow skellys.. for orc/kobold/ogre type mobs I live with the faster fists and feet, wrapped in whatever special flavor handgear I have at the moment.

I definitely benefit from a qs when I'm overwhelmed with mob on all sides.

QSTAFFS for sure on most Mobs. With power Attack, Greater Fire Stance, 30 STR, Cleave and Great Cleave....it's quite Nice DPS.


Kamas used for: Dual Vorpals of PG (with GTWF); Dual Keen Smiters (Dont have or want Imp. Crit Slash); and another few Weapon Sets for Disruption w/Cursespewing; Paralyzing and Destruction, etc..

Your base dmg roll on handwraps goes up with level though, 1d6 at start, then goes to 1d8, 1d10 at lvl 8, and im guessing 1d12 at 10 or 12. Crit mult is x2 as far as I have seen, so maybe use a quarterstaff until lvl 10ish, then start using handwraps with bonuses like, holy burst, of fire or something (basically something with 2 effects. That with power attack can do some nice dmg. Then when you hit 16ish, make a greensteel kama/quarterstaff of kicking butt/earthgrab, and your set (until they come up with greensteel wraps)
My monk at lvl 8 is using handwraps, and does more damage with those than a quarterstaff (holy ice wraps)

I use handwraps because i like the monk martial arts animations, but I whip out my +1 transmuting q-staff of greater giant bane, when I tank the Reaver.

No one ever complains about Shaamis' DPS on the reaver.

I have a dreamspitter too, so i use that occasionally just for fun, but it's usually burst handwraps of weighted, for junk mobs.

I use handwraps for the animations and switch to staff for things like harry and the reaver don't own a kama at all.
Stuning the stuff and auto criting is fun as well as i have both fist and blow.

I have some nice greater bane qstaffs that I still use, and a banishing of pg. Most of the time it's unarmed or kamas though. When we start to get bane handwraps, I'll be phasing out the staffs (and retraining Power Attack probably, once I get the full set).

Not yet. Two weapon fighting feats will grant monks additional unarmed attacks in module 8.

Monks making unarmed attacks do not suffer an off hand half-strength penalty when two weapon fighting - they apply their full Strength bonus to all unarmed strikes, as per the PHB.

I think Handwraps will make a comeback...


However, mobs with high DR, I use a transmuting 1/4 staff. Eventually, I hope to only have like 6 extra situational weapons (3 1/4 staffs and 2 Kama sets) that I will use beyond Handwraps.

Considering my monk is a Warforged and uses the Warforged Power Attack Enhancements along with Improved Two-Handed Fighting (I have to wait until level 18 to get Greater Two-Handed Fighting) I still do more overall damage with a big stick than with my fist or foot.
