Default Rapier's and Two Weapon Fighting

Just curious, I know that a rapier is considered a light weapon. I can fight with two light weapons of any kind and not suffer a full blown penalty as if I were wielding a normal sized weapon in either hand. However, when I switch to two rapiers, even though it's a light weapon, the game seems to be treating them as if they are not light weapons. Is this a bug? I know it's considered a light weapon but I don't get why I can wield two short swords and not get the penalty but the minute I wield two rapier's I get penalized for it. It seems a bit odd to me.

Rapiers are finesse weapons, but not light weapons. You need over-sized two weapon fighting to dual-wield rapiers without additional penalties.

Curious, is that actually in the 3.5 ruleset or is that a DDO interpretation? I confess I'm not as up on the 3.5 ruleset. I was wondering because I found it odd to be gaining the benefits of finesse while suffering the penalties.

That's D&D 3.5. The rapier is the only weapon in DDO with that set of attributes. The fighting chain and whip also share them in D&D 3.5. I imagine it has to do with the length of a rapier compared to light weapons. It's certainly not an issue of weight, because a rapier weighs the same as or less than every "light" weapon but a dagger (looking at the 3.5 SRD). I guess it's just too "uber" to be able to dual-wield weapons that do 1d6, 18-20x2 without additional penalties (or using an additional feat slot).

There is one rapier you could use in your off hand without the penalty normally associated with two heavy weapons. The Fell Rapier of Ice. Now given what the rapier is, however, I'm still inclined to go with over sized feat.

Many builds don't even need Oversized, depending on attack bonus. Really, the only builds that can possibly get any major benefit from it are 3/4 BAB builds -- Rogues specifically, but Bards to a smaller extent (though most TWF Bards are Warchanters, so that becomes a rather moot point).

I have to agree with tanka. I find my barbarians and even my bard at lvl 6 dont really need the feat. You can always take ostwf and respec it when your BAB gets up at higher lvls. I dont even take it on my lowbie barbs anymore. I find i need an extra toughness feat more.
Toons are in a constant state of flux. Khyber server.
