It was 6 for atleast before MOD6 came out. I swear to god Turbine needs to stop nerfing this game and just bring out more content.

That would mean you have seen lvl 5s getting exp with lvl 10s, when the cap was 10? I cant remember such a thing and I bought the game 2 or 3 days after launch

Now there is no way that 6 levels was the case before mod6. Gianthold was definately lvl 10-14s, with the 10s getting half exp and the 9s getting nadda. Pretty sure the same was the case for the desert (lvl 7s out in the cold, lvl 8-12 groups with lvl 8s at half)

Yeah xman26 has no clue what he is talking about. It's 4 level difference with the 5th level difference getting only 50% xp. It's been that way even in beta.

5th diff is ZERO exp automatically, 4 levels diff is -50% powerleveling penalty.

    Both of them.

The powerlevel gap is an issue for casual gamers, but no issue for powergamers, due mainly to schedule reasons. Again, I press for a Powergamer difficulty setting and a Casual difficulty setting, this time based on total playtime per week(Non-AFK). Of course, it would be similar to Normal vs Hardcore rules in other D&D games.

Sorry, but you're out to lunch. I've been playing since late 2006 (which was what mod4) and 4 levels always was the max back to then...

Wasn't always as it is now. I can't recall the exact numbers but will give it a shot:

    within 3 levels=no penalty
    4 levels=-50%
    5 levels=-60%
    6 levels=-70%
    7 levels=-80%
    8 levels=-90%
    9 levels=-100%

    From Mod 1 notes:
If you are 4 levels or more below the max level of someone in your Party, you will see reduced XP, culminating in potentially zero xp.

I don't feel like searching all the notes for the current setup.

I don't see how the lvl difference gap is more of an issue to the casual players. If there were no lvl caps powergamers could dual box with their lvl 16 and get characters to max lvl in little time or they could ask their powergamer guildies to help them out and again lvl in no time. It's an issue for both types and I'm glad the cap is there.

when would u possibly want someone even 5 levels above you in party? If you're still leveling I would go with no penalty, regardless if it used to be 5 lvls or 6. Having a lvl 10 in your group when you're level 5, that level ten is gonna mop the floor with the quest, while you do squat. Or if its a challenge for the level ten, then u're a soulstone.

The only thing I can see is if you want to get started on raiding early, since its easier to put together a raid with capped players than the assortment of people still doing the level grind. But if you're flagged for Reaver before level 13, you cant wait another day or two in order to get full exp?

Just because this game has a penalty to deter power leveling, and WoW does also, doesnt mean squat.

I could see a case being made for a lower level Bard - the songs get better as you get higher, but even a level 11 Bard in one of the new raids would probably be better than no Bard.

Edit: and since I'm posting anyways, I'm pretty sure there was no such penalty when the game launched. Fairly early on they added it, along with a patch to prevent lower level characters from getting as good quality loot if they're too low level for the quest. Remember how plat farmers used to run a quest with like 2 capped characters and bring in 4 others just to get ransacked? I would guess the power leveling penalties came in around the first level increase, but I don't remember for sure.

All done with Completionist (again) and Epic Completionist. First character to 30 on Sarlona* (before the rollback).
