Spells to pick on level up

I seem to recall reading some time ago, but can no longer find any reference to it, that there are certain arcane spells that are not sold by the merchants and thus should always be selected by characters at level up (unless you have found a scroll with said spell on it). Is this old information, or are there indeed some spells that are most easily acquired by taking them at level up?

The spells you can't find on merchants tend to be persistent AOE's

The list includes (but mayen't be limited to):

All level 8 spells
All "symbol of" spells - note symbol of death isn't on the loot tables at all: the only way to get it is to pick it on level up.
cloud kill
solid fog
acid fog
Wall of Fire
dimension door

1. even if you are too low level to cast them, you can add spells to your spellbook with no chance of failure.
2. you cannot waste scrolls/inscribing components, as it doesn't allow you to "re-inscribe" a spell you already have (even if you can't see the spell because you are too low level).

because of this, there's an easy way to deal with the situation: inscribe all the spells from the vendors BEFORE you level.

When you level, the list of spells you can choose from will only contain the spells you don't have (the ones you can't buy).

Before you take a level that gets you new spells (odd levels) go to the scroll vendor and buy one of each of the new level scrolls. Then buy the scribing components and scribe them all (as mentioned previously you can scribe them before you can cast them. Next go level up and the trainer will only give you the choices of the spells that you don't already have which be elimination are the ones that you can't buy at a vendor.

Yep its as the others put, on my newest wizard I have brought scrolls to inscribe of spells you can get from vendors. And im never afraid to ask a person who leaves an arcane spell scroll in a chest for it. That way when it comes to spells like merfolks blessing, ck, dd and the like I can take them at level up and not have to worry should I take this spell instead. And while it does kinda take the challenge of actually studying the spells to learn them for a wizard (and man do I miss the xp you get in other games for scribbing a scroll successfully). you wont hear me complaining about being able to without error scribe arcane spells into my book at lower levels for higher level use. I think they make up for the ease with the costs of the higher spell inscription materials anway

Thanks for the answers, folks... I already have scribed spells all the way up to level 8 into my Wiz's spell book... everything my high level cleric and other toons get they pass over to Tigseena.

You sure about that? I could have sworn I found a symbol of death scroll once and passed it to my wizard...

did they change this? It always said I could not inscribe them if I was not high enough level.

Granted, my first caster wasn't created until drow were introduced ( had only played melees and rogues from beta till then ), but I've always scribed higher level scrolls with Shar since I've had her. If you truly couldn't do so at one time, then it was changed a LONG time ago.

Good to know that they finally got them onto the loot tables then. I haven't been playing much since the last update (out of town), but I know that from mod6 through to (at least) mod7, they were not on the loot lists. Will finally be able to get it on my own wizard now haha

man i was about to post a thread about this exact same thing hehe glad i decided to actually read thread titles first..i knew of acid fog, d door, firewall, and cloudkill but i wasnt sure about any other spells..

but yea as soon as i created my wiz i inscribed every spell available to him hehe
