It's cool, but c'mon! We never get concept cars! People always say they lead to innovation in the auto market, but people have been wanting futuristic cars for decades and we still get bodies that look dated and boring. I want a cool sci-fi car, dang it!

Give me a knife. I'll show you why that will never work. Hope you like a skinless car.
Beyond that, amusing.
pfft ill just cast stoneskin on that car.

Meh, give me a flying cow. I'd enjoy that far more for transportation.

and uh... that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. Please god... please let this concept die. This might seem new to most of you but there has been this intense battle of design school engineers for a long time to skin a car in something other than metal or fiberglass or urethane that will actually be able to be even a fraction as durable and it's never even come close. (ok... carbon fiber but the cost of that is... insane)
The lines of the car are very nice tho. Still a fan of the previous BMW design philosophy than this new one with all the sharp edges but they do look pretty lol.
What about a firberglass and kevlar compsite? Granted i know most will think bulletproof then, but why couldn't that work? I would think a knife wouldn't skin it that easily then.
Now that is an interesting Concept.
And It is being used already in military vehicles, and composites
themselves are already being used in aircraft.
However there would be some enviromental considerations that
would have to be addressed, while Kevlar itself may not be a
HAZMAT problem the combination of that AND Fiberglass
would have to be examined very closely.
I must admit though...
I initially thought the concept was very Cool
but as I thought about it, I came to realize...Maybe not...
The reality is that at speed,
How much protection would it provide?
What if something crazy happens...
Like Say...
A bird kamakazie's you at 45 degree angle and Nails your door?
At a speed of 65 to 75 Mph there is a possibility it can Crack Glass.
How would a cloth door stand up to that?
I don't even want to THINK about what would happen
if you were broadsided by a Deer!

I hate BMW's designs they're terrible. IN fact most german cars look terrible. Now the italians...(alfa romeo, ferrari etc) I won't deny bmw and the germans engineer brilliantly though
I drove past a black NSX today and still think that car looks current, even though it was probably 15 years old. Honda really did a nice job on that.

While Pretty, the body would hardly have the stamina to stand up to a Canadian Winter OR a Canadian Summer with the Black Flies so large that they carry off whole deer and unattended children. How you would even clean that skin is beyond me and it would take just 1 sub-human with a grudge against anything nice and you could say goodbye to it. Never mind the dangers of Highway driving and **** falling off of 18 wheelers.
Interesting though...
Useless... but Interesting.

Normally Asp you would be right.
When bonded properly no, they do not pose a problem.
Fiberglass has been used for years on the Corvette (Tm.)
and when fasioned into the CLOTH variation Kevlar is fine.
It has been used for Bullet resistant vests for Years as well.
However, much like Carbon Fiber composite
(The Other material which was mentioned.)
Kevlar(when fashined into the Hardened version)
And Fiberglass, Both pose a possible Health risk
when DELAMINATION begins to occur.
(There can exsist the possibility of breathing in the fibers.
and there is the possiblity should cut yourself on the Delaminated
material; that you can experience possible health risks associated with
intrusion of the carbon Fiber/ Kevlar/ Fiberglass material into your body.)
So according to Federal MSDS and OSHA regulations,
they must be treated as a Potential Health Risk/ Hazmat.
It is this possiblity that must be addressed if these materials are to be considered.
Even if it is found that everything would be fine,
you have to provision for any possible HAZMAT considerations.
I am just saying that in the provisioning process,
It must be CONSIDERED Hazmat until potential
safety cosiderations are addressed...
It is a mandatory procedure for logistics.

Well, I am a Environmental Safety & Health consultant in Missouri, and neither fiberglass nor kevlar are regulated materials in my state or any of the neighboring states. Yes, there is potential for inhaling fibers, what there is not is any legislation that regulates the application of these materials (at least not in THIS state).
Technically the fibers from fiberglass are, currently, considered to be too large to be respirable or constitute a danger to an individual's health in most states. Certain states like California or New York may or may not have legislation otherwise, but on the whole it is not a regulated material in the USA.
In general, fiberglass is considered a general waste, no different than wood or drywall.
However, I don't deal with the "hardened" versions of these materials very often.
Oh Wow,
I worked in Aviation in the Military for close to 20 years (Marines)
And composite was Always on the MSDS list.
Fiberglass was covered generally but
I didn't deal with it that often either.
But it was also on the list as a Potential health problem material.
Interesting, Thanks for the Info.
I had always been taught that it was Hazmat.
