Default Consideration of others in MMOs

There is quite a spectrum of personalities on Sarlona. Many people I greatly enjoy playing with. However, I really don't understand where some people are coming from. This is a game isn't it? The purpose of a game is to have fun and enjoy yourself.

Example 1) I'm in a raid. I can't hear the guy giving me instructions because his mic is too soft to hear for me. I'm really trying to follow directions, but when I tell him I can't hear him, he treats me like I'm stupid, which is contrary to what I know of myself. I usually don't have problems hearing other peoples mics.

Example 2) I'm in a group where the leader is running pell-mell through the quest. I've never done the quest. I've been playing these games for like 7 years, in various guises. I was playing DDO just after beta. I get treated like garbage when I can't keep up. I leave party of course, but not before I get accused of being rude to them.

Example 3) I'm in a group with a bunch of people who know one another. Again, I am not familiar with the quest, and they are running through. One starts imitating a mentally handicapped person saying they're lost. This is pretty lame.

Are so many people that soulless and obsessed with success in a video game that they cannot be considerate to another? I'm not a stupid player, but apparently some people think if you haven't memorized a particular quest, then you must be a 'noob'. To me, its kind of being out of touch with reality when you are so focused on your power gaming that you treat others with rudeness and cold hearted words when they don't fit your efficient plan. Also, for me discovering the tricks to a new quest is enjoyable. People who act like this ruin that pleasure.

When I know a quest and others do not, I always try to show them the way. There is much more pleasure to be had in a game treating your fellow gamers like friends. I don't see the benefit of throwing away your compassion for your fellow human beings.

I just got finished saying it in another thread. I wont lie there have been nights ive gotten on and just wanted to get the job done. I may have had a bad day, stressed out. And try as I might not to bring it into the game im only human. But after awhile it does dawn on me that whatever happens in game win or lose does not reflect on who I am. And that if a character I play dies or god forbid messes up its not the end of the world. I take it to this thought, many people even though they use the game to escape really want to succeed. They may have it rough in the outside world and coming to the game and taking things down and being elite gives them satisfaction. Should they be rude to others who are just on to enjoy the game? No but its just human nature when you find something your good at you either brag or expect others to be the same. I wish people would lighten up to but you cant change a persons personality. And I dont care what anyone says if a person is not a team player in life they arent going to become one in a game where its supposed to be the norm. If they are lone wolves in life they arent gonna want to be the high social want to smell the roses type dungeon crawlers. I could be wrong about that but I tend to notice that a lot of players personalities match their characters. Sometimes its a good thing sometimes its a bad thing.

I agree with the OP though some people need to lighten up and remember that characters dying or failing a quest isnt the end of the world. Unless the person is the kind of player that really let what others think about how they play get to them, I say shrug it off and walk away. This is a big game (to me anyway) and for the players who dont think your uber enough im sure there are players who will want to just have fun.

First off I feel for you and I agree that other people can be inconsiderate. I am newly back to playing DDO and so far I have been lucky with pugs but in the past I have had issues. One thing i do before I get into a group that is doing a quest that I have never done before,I state that I have never done the quest before and ask if the members of the party would be willing to take there time and show me the quest. My highest character is only level 5 and I still have not earned enough favor to get the drow elf race or 32 point builds. I took a long time off to play other MMO's. Nope it wasn't WoW. =) I started playing the game when it first came out and dropped it after the 2nd module and right now I am just looking for some people that are nice and mature to do quests with. I am on the sever that starts with a "G" I forget the name.

i have to say that this is why i do shun from pugs. attitude. most people i run across are in two groups... cool peeps i have fun hanging out with and the beige. the beige are people i could take or leave. you know... you are in that group and you get the quest done but no one says anything and the other players could just as easily be programmed npc's.

then there's another group. the group that only takes one to spoil the fun. the group that forgot that the real end game is to have fun and enjoy the time you are spending playing. the group you have run into. sure... i want to get the quests done. i want to get my loot. but who i am and how i behave along the way directly equates to the quality person i am. the same goes for everyone - if you are not quality to begin with, you are most likely not the type of person i want to quest with regardless of how technically good you might be. name calling, yelling at others, verbal abuse... none of these have any place in a GAME.

i've said it before... some players could learn a thing or two from my toddlers. please and thank you. always use your manners. no hurting your friends with words or hands. always try to help.

My highest character is a lvl 8 that I rarely play anymore because I rolled a drow rogue/wiz the other day. As I get my other characters higher, I try and shy away from joining groups that are doing quests I havn't done before for the three reasons you stated above.

There are those groups that Caelan talked about that are fun and talkative and I dont care if I get lost or fall behind, because they don't. Those groups however, are few and far between.

The best thing to ALWAYS do when joining a PUG is to communicate.

Unless otherwise told, most players will assume everyone has already done this quest on some character and has an idea about the quest. If it is your first time, speak up and most groups will be willing to work with you. Remain silent and everyone assumes you know what is happening and are just quiet. Some groups will want to still go fast and will generally let you know it is not going to be a good fit.

Most of the time when players complain about how a quest was run or led, it comes after the fact. Then it is too late to deal with the situation.

So number one...speak up. Unlike our characters, as far as I know, none of us have the ability to read minds or perform magic...
