I've been playing Diablo 2 this week and it occurred to me. Why are all of the dungeons in DDO lit up like a Christmas tree??? It would be cool if they were dark and we needed items and/or spells for lighting. Just a thought...

I've been practicing my stealth skills in Rainbow. If you don't do the gamma cheeze and actually use the radiant arc like you're supposed to, it's a wonderful atmospheric effect. Also fun is dying and making the trip back to your corpse in the dark.
So, yeah, /signed.

The lighting (or lack of) in Rainbow is really cool.
But the fact that all the monsters can see you and the terrain is made to kill you if you take a wrong step.....etc.
Well, despite being cool I've either ran to grab that scepter or adjusted my display settings to compensate.
Being blind is not fun IMO.
Now......if we all had torches.....well.....that would be kinda cool. Or if magical weapons gave off light!
While I would LOVE to have player light sources, if I remember correctly, think the DEVs said (or something to the effect) that there are limitations to what they can do concerning light and how the dungeons are designed and client limitations.
Just not possible.
Even if we cannot have dark dungeons where we must have a light source, I would hope in future content some dungeons are no so brightly illuminated.
Plus people would just turn up the Gamma rendering all that coding moot.
And is one of reasons we should have Dark dungeons, many of the standard mobs are of the type who would have lowlight/darkvision, and it would be great to have the races utilize these as well.
I have been a fan of seeing this throw back added, and all the light sources in deep dark dungeons put in, hell undead dont need light, so who keeps those torches in Delera's lit, there are NO Artificers, so dont say they are Ever Bright lights of Eberron.
Bring on the darkness, so we can use light, and continual light, etc...
(too bad most folks would just do a gamma work-around)

The game engine doesn't support dynamic lighting except under very controlled circumstances (dev statement, not mine). It would be cool, but the technology just isn't there without a major rewrite of the engine.

Those would be the "Very Controlled Circumstances" I mentionedNotice there is only the one light and no other ambient or static lighting to speak of.
This is the same reason spells like Fireball don't cast their own light on the walls of dungeons. They can't, because those are not controlled circumstances.

Not to mention Ron, adding multiple light sources from up to six individuals and the effect that has on the environment. Reflections, blooming, and other graphics. UG! Can see our clients chugging to a halt...
While I would LOVE to explore a deep, dark, dank dungeon with only a torch to see by, unfortunately our current tech can't do it.
