Yeah, so I'm intruding on another server's forum. Forgive me.

A while back I ran a quest with 2 Brazilians and 3 other Americans. The one guy didn't speak very good English, although he seemed to understand it somewhat. The other Brazilian had decent English skills. Let me tell you, their mistaken typed and spoken English was of more use than the fluent English speakers. I'd have traded the other 3 Americans for 3 more Brazilians who knew what they were doing, even if we couldn't always understand each other. I'd run with them any day of the week...those 3 other Americans, not so much.

The standard chinese romanization system is called Hanyu Pinyin. Literally translated as Chinese Phonetics. I think.
There are indications of intonation in its written form that are difficult to replicate with a keyboard. But while these may cause confusion over single words, contextual clues within a phrase usually helps to indicate which tone (and therefore which word) is actually being used.

As for an online converter. I'm afraid I'm not familiar with any. Perhaps googling Hanyu Pinyin will help?

I was so tempted in joining a chinese LFM last night that said americans welcome... but I was to tired. I need to write down the chinese sayings, but I need to find the profanity phrases too before I give it a try.

I was kinda irritated in a Xorian run when everyone was speaking chinese, but didn't mind once I realized they were pwning everything and flying through the quest. Of course, I'm a ***** so as long as I'm getting loot and XP efficiently I don't mind.

I gotta give them credit though, every Chinese sorc I've grouped with has been a fireball wielding twitch combat genius. I frequently find myself surrounded by dead burnt mobs after I pull aggro with my intimitank. Good times!

Stormreach Delvers Society seems to be an all Chinese guild with decent players, I haven't had a bad experience with them. Can't say the same for all "American" guilds. ;-)

In all honesty, I've found that it's an equal dose of good and bad. Yes, communication can be tough. I had a group with one guy who spoke practically no english, was a warforged pure wizard with the adamantine body feat wielding a longsword, and ended up being the party leader after the rest of the group left halfway through waterworks. I tried to ask him to set up an LFM or to set me as the group leader (I did my best to use simple language, but that wasn't the simplest request), but 'twas a no-go. And I was a rogue entirely designed for group play, so soloing the rest of WW wasn't really an option.

On the other hand, one of the best clerics I've had in my group was from somewhere in asia, and he ended up being pretty loyal, too (didn't drop group at the slightest sign of incompetance). He kept everyone over 75% health but didn't waste mana casting heals when people were down a sliver, he didn't demand money for his services, etc, etc.

So, basically, what I'm saying is that asians are roughly exactly the same as north americans. Some have absolutely no right to be playing a game where typing/communication skills, strategy, etc. are all required. Others have most or all of those skills. I've grouped with people from the USA who were worse than the adamintine warforged, sword-wielding, pure wizard I described above, and I've seldom grouped with someone I enjoyed grouping with as much as the cleric.

I believe the proper phrase is "they did not speak English well" but I am not an editor, librarian or english teacher so I may be wrong.

I have noticed many LFM's that simply state China, Chinese or have some sort of Chinese wording in them, now being a simple man I figured it was because of the monk explosion. I did not know they shut down the China Server. I guess it is easy to shut down a server and send all those characters to another and would explain the increased lag issues and why they could not possibly give everyone an extra character slot to make a monk, but I digress. I pay my X amount each 6 months can I have characters on the European servers or did they also shut those down?

Anyway I say "Welcome" to our new adventurers from China or wherever.

The current news is DDO China licensed publisher SD didn't want to renew their license with TB probably due to not making enough money, so they have officially shut down the servers. Most of the loyal players there decided to try US servers, and some will stick around. Most are very seasoned players and power gamers, and most does not understand spoken English but can understand basic written English words.

Some of them have mad skeelz mate don't you worry.
Think about it... if the servers are closed over there (bet that Natural Disaster stuff didn't help ) we will be getting alot of great players that have just as likely been playing as long, and as Uberly, as any of us!

I have noticed that alot of LFMs say "Chinese Only" which.. i can kinda understand from a communications point of view (and possibly tolerance) but it seems that also galvanises seperation.
I have yet to see an LFM that says "No Chinese" so we're doing ok there.

I played UO with alot of Korean guys... their engrish was not the best, but **** they can zerg. They take gaming extremely seriously, are fiercely loyal as guildies, and usually played for hours at a time. There was a translator available but it caused quite a bit of lag (translators should be more advanced by now, i played UO late 90's) but basically everything that was typed was translated in realtime into english.

Personally i'm all for the influx of Chinese players!

(btw plz correct me if i am wrong, but i am pretty sure there are more chinese speakers worldwide than english speakers)

Try going into the Lobster at like 5-7am Eberron OWNS all that comes down lol well kinda they stone/blind/curse until u cant take it and call someone else in to kill you hehe. but yeah other than that we all should try to have paitences. soon we'll all know the simple words and be on our way
