Default Elf Ranger for a newbie

I've been playing for about a week and a half on my Dwarf fighter based on Aranticus' template. I like my fighter, but I wanted to give ranged combat a shot. I was going to use his forest warden template, but that builds a melee ranger, not a ranged one like I want. I am still trying to understand the mechanics of the game and get completely lost in character creation. I have no idea what to do. I'm not even sure how to spend my skill points as a fighter and as a ranger, I'll get a lot more with more class skills. I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed. *sends out cry for help*

Ranged combat is completely broken. Take the advice now. Don't waste your time like I did. Also, before you make any other characters, unlock drow. Just don't go making any tanks with them.

Granted I dont make great builds.... but my concepts are pretty sound.

    Elf ranger 6/pali 2/ fighter 8

Str 14 (fighter levels will give you +2 or 3 more) 24 with +5 item
Dex 14 (elf and ranger gives you +3 more) 22 with a +5 item
    Con 16 (+5 item and a +1 tome gives you 22 Con)
Int 10 (maybe in the future if you get a +3 tome you can get combat expertise if you want it)
wis 9 (6 level ranger spells do help much at high levels... not worth the investment but if you wear an item you will be fine)
cha 12 ( charisma items and tomes help here for saves and rangers charm ability) 18 with +5 item and +1 tome

*this still leaves you 5 attribute points to spend on level ups*

The key to ranging is real 3 feats: bow strength, rapid shot and many shot. This gives you what you need to range and still gives you a solid frontline character for when you cant range anymore.

Take away 3 levels of fighter and add 3 more levels of ranger for a lighter build with evasion. You would have great saves, evasion but slightly lower HP which honestly balances each other out. If your not getting hit much you wont need the HP

you will have lots to tinker with and modify to your own tastes......... AC potential is average........ I truly recommend you post your wants in the build by request threads.

Ranged combat is not dead........... just situational............ ask the pit fiend, demon queen and all the residents of the large explorer areas.

If ya want a good ranged Ranger its not to hard to make
14 str is good 16+dex 14+ con 8 int 8 wis(dont need any higher +6 items will let ya use yer spells then add +3 tomes later) and 8 cha
I would just go Full ranger and Bam ya got a ranged ranger and if the going gets tough git dem weapons out and give it to em

What a stupid ruling, we all know that D&D promotes satanism, not gangs.
