Default Why is all the "new" information going to other websites first?

Okay. I'm sure there will be a bazillion rants on the loss of the WDA (and honestly, I agree as it is one of the few things I actually come here to read).

This is not one of them.

What I really want to do is put out my opinion on another issue and see if people agree or disagree. So here it is.

While I can understand and applaud the increase in advertising and exclusive content given to many of the games review websites, it has begun to chap my sensitive behind that these websites are getting the information before we, the loyal continuing customer, have a chance to hear about it.

Turbine pushes us to come to the forums to be informed and yet all of the information they want us to have is given to outsiders first. Sure, it is just a click of the mouse to head over to mmorpg.org or Ten Ton Hammer. But it feels like an insult when an announcement is posted here in the forums that basically says, "Hey guys. If you want the cool new info, go over to their website because we told them and not you."

I've been with this game since just after it started and I love the game. But I can't help but feel like at this point the people running DDO really don't care about the forums population. Shouldn't we be entitled to the first look BEFORE the press?

    Your thoughts.

It's not my favorite thing I've ever heard, but it has to do with marketing partnerships and business growth nonsense that I doubt we could understand. Anyways, to partner with these other game sites they need to provide them with unique information to drive traffic to those sites, which generally work off of banner advertising income. If they post the same info here, their partner sites wouldn't get all that traffic.

The advertising game sucks. Everywhere. In all markets. I doubt they'd be doing this if they didn't think it were best for the game--getting seen by all the geeks that visit those game sites is a good thing--so let's hope they know what they're doing.

It's nothing personal, they're just trying to get more visibility to non-DDO customers to lure them in. We can still go to those sites and view the information, and at the same time DDO will have more visibility itself.

I will admit that the advertising helps bring in new blood. And the "exclusives" help keep DDO's name out there. That said, I still feel that WE should get at least SOME of the information first. Or perhaps we should get our own exclusives. We used to... look at some of the old articles that were written around the earlier Mods that described in generalities some of the new features. We haven't really seen effort like that in informing US for at least 2 Mods. When I wanted to know about monks or crafting or anything else, I had to go elsewhere for the information... kind of like getting your news from the Daily Show. Interesting, for sure, but a little watered down and rather biased.

My real issue is when friends who play other MMOs know about upcoming content in MY MMO before I do... I don't read those other websites. I have no need to. I play 2 MMOs... DDO and LOTRO. Shouldn't I get my news from Turbine and not from Ten Ton Hammer or my WOW playing buddies who try every game under the sun? Shouldn't the people who remain loyal to this game get some sort of benefit for not hopping around? Isn't that the point of developing a "player base"?

All you need to do is look at LOTRO as the model they are going to follow. They have monthly conference calls with with the likes of MMORPG featuring exclusive updates on new items coming in the next release. It looks as though turbine has finally broken free of any relastionship with Atari, and is doing marketung again. The question is how well will they do it

    Its like this................

You run a game and every week you publicly state everything new thats on the way but you dont feel you are getting enough visibility which can directly result in subscriptions.

News and game review sites would gladly profile your game if they could print something that you cant find anywhere else, because for them:

    - traffic equals money
    - exclusive info brings traffic

It then seems logical to stop posting all the details every week and instead offer it up to these game sites as exclusives. This has many benefits:

    - Puts your product in the spotlight
    - sends your subscriber base over to these other sites, increasing the other sites traffic
    - generates interest and puts you in a position to obtain more subscriptions

Its mutually beneficial for both parties involved but requires a change of expectations and habits on the part of your subscribers as they must now become accustomed to trafficing other sites for info.

While it may seem like you are left out of the loop, we all have the ability, once we have found this info to come back to the boards and ask a Dev to expand or clarify on certain points if they can.

change is always difficult.......Im not saying I like it.......... but I do hope good things come from it.

If the WDA is all we have to give up to get a better playing experience......Im willing to give it a try.

Any information Turbine gives you is off course biased........... they are trying to sell a game.

Releasing info to everyone at the same time causes more buzz than telling a few people before it releases and everyone else when its already out.

You want some hype on a release.............. you want people lining up to get it............. you dont want people to say "hey DDO released Mod 8 2 days ago" "Oh really, I would have been interested if I new but I just blew all my cash on game X..... they have been talking about this game for months now"

and where do you get your LOTRO info, because they certainly don't publish it on LOTRO.com, it goes out to MMORPG and TenTonHammer just like every other game

Does not make of that decision a good one.

Obviously, it is the cheapest way to "advertise" wihout actually advertising. Someone got a nice bonus off of the idea, trust me.

I think many of you are missing my point. I don't disagree with Turbine using much of the information as "Exclusives" for advertising. I just think that at least SOME of the information should come to us first. Fine. Use 95% of the new stuff for marketing. But at least give that last 5% as exclusives to your current players.

Otherwise, why come to the forums? I don't routinely go to the LOTRO forums. Why? They are basically a place for players to whine about bugs and nerfs or argue about how accurate the lore is to what Tolkien intended (which is kind of like watching a Christian and a Muslim argue about God... no offense intended to either group, of course).

The upside of the DDO forums was that it was still, in part, a place to come for information about the game. But now... not so much. The DDO forums are going the way of the LOTRO forums.

So, what's the difference between coming to the forums in the morning and clicking on a thread message to read -or- clicking on a link to TenTonHammer or MMORPG within that message?

By 'forcing' us to make an extra mouseclick, the information is disseminated to a mysteriously vast LARGER AUDIENCE!

I don't care if I have my information lovingly crafted in a handmade thread message created personally by someone at Turbine or linked to the information on other sites. That way everyone is benefits:

    Turbine gets the information out
Gaming site 'X' gets increased traffic (we're going to their site for the info)
We get the info just as fast as if it was only posted here
Other potential players see that DDO is a viable product and perhaps become subscribers.

Given the choice, I'd rather share the info with the world rather than posted on an obscure dedicated game forum.

Nope, not missing the point. The whole rest of the world gets to hear about new features/plans, with higher visibility to DDO. You get to hang out here and rub elbows with the devs. Don't make them feel so worthless, they're worth 5% right?

You missed a critical step so I added it for you. If 10 ton hammer, gamespot, or mmorpg wanted to post the full WDA details that would be great but they won't. They want to craft it into a short catchy story.

So give us the WDA (delaying the occasional tidbit for a week or two). Use the screen shots, the video clips, and the hands-on tests for the gaming site exclusives. Eye candy is what they want anyway. The whole line of "we can't give you a WDA because we need it for marketing" is bunk because those sites really aren't interested in the gory details like we are.

It's because you,the client is so important that you should line up like everyone else.Actions speak louder than words and turbine proves that no matter how many bad decisions,it's always possible to one-up on it.

Excluding the fact that I don't have access to gaming websites of the off time computer at work? And the fact that I learned back in my SWG and EQ2 days that those sites are all but worthless for telling me the kind of info that *I* want to know so now I don't bother going to them at home?

Excluding the fact that for most of DDO's life, we've all had a line of communication with the devs to let them know what we liked and what concerns that we've had with the new stuff coming down the pipe, and being able to let them know when there was still time for them to change it? And now one of the last lines of communication have been broken?

Well, in that case, sure... no difference.

I don't play other MMOs. I play this one. I've come to expect a certain quality of service. That quality of service is drastically changing. Is it for the better or for the worse? I don't know and only time will tell... but I have a bad feeling about this.

If you're talking about the console story, Turbine didn't tell anyone. They posted a job opening on their careers page and someone was smart enough to check it and put 2 and 2 together. I imagine they thought/hoped no one would notice until they were ready to make their grand announcement at some point in the future, probably at some convention where they could make a big splash.

If you're talking about the $40 million in new revenue, that was put out on a press release on Turbine's website. That is where they put all their news that isn't game specific.

Any of us could have had a first look on both of those if we looked around. I didn't see the job posting because I generally don't check them. (I don't need a new job.) I did see the press release on the money on last week, when it was posted.
