Passed a candy cane over to my monk.Used had 8 kii went to 3 kii?
Is it suppose to work like that?

To the OP, since a candy cane is a wand, and wands are not considered to be monk weapons, it makes you (as others have already mentioned) "uncentered" which will cause you to lose many of your monk abilities...ki being one of them.
