    Default Question About Light Ray

When ghaeles are in orb form, they can use spell-like ability "light ray".

I've been trying to find a detailed description of this ability, but am unable to.

Ultimately what I'm trying to discover is whether this ability is supposed to be blocked by globe of invulnerability or not. Currently, in DDO, it is not.

I'd also like to know if the damage it does is also remotely in line with what it's supposed to be.

Aye, they hit hard on elite.

Ghoste: "hey look at this, I can block their searing light with a globe."
    Party "Coool!"

If they only hit hard on elite.....that should be a clue

That would tell me..whatever the power is, it needs to beat a certain DC roll to get through your globe.

at elite, they can beat the DC.

not sure if that helps, but that is all I can think of.

I think it might be a case where the damage on Normal and Hard isn't like it is on Elite which makes it more noticible that the globe isn't stoping it.

    true true

it can be hard keeping track of

    who hit whom for what?

during a busy fight. If I end up dying, I usually need to back track the combat

Noticeable has nothing to do with it. This was my first time trying globe against their attacks. I usually put up solid or acid fog and cloudkills and run around and jump all over like a monkey trying to stay alive. If it doesn't block it on elite, of course it wont block the same attacks on normal, even if they are a bit weaker. Globe relates to spell level, not caster level.

No DC for globe of invulnerability. It simply blocks all spell effect lvl 4 and below. No appeal, just blocked.

I had originally assumed they were casting searing light, which is easily blocked by a globe. When I died standing in a globe, I looked at my combat log and saw "light ray" and started wondering what precisely that was.

Ghoste... look at my post above... Light ray is not a Spell-Like Ability... It is a Extraordinary Ability, which the Globe does not work against...

I haven't seen anything more desriptive.

I know that it is a ray and can be dodged......but since they try to shoot you at point blank range, dodging doesn't work very well.

This is one attack that really bothers me......60-80 pts of damage with no defense possible!

I like charming in this quest.......but I get lots of resistance from groups I'm with.

But it makes sense to me to get them using those rays on each other instead of us......they should have no defense against it either.

Light Ray is an Extraordinary Ability thus are not effected by globe if invulnerability..

    Extraordinary Abilities (Ex)

Extraordinary abilities are nonmagical, though they may break the laws of physics. They are not something that just anyone can do or even learn to do without extensive training.

These abilities cannot be disrupted in combat, as spells can, and they generally do not provoke attacks of opportunity. Effects or areas that negate or disrupt magic have no effect on extraordinary abilities. They are not subject to dispelling, and they function normally in an antimagic field.

Using an extraordinary ability is usually not an action because most extraordinary abilities automatically happen in a reactive fashion. Those extraordinary abilities that are actions are standard actions unless otherwise noted.
