Pfft. I actually had a cop write me a ticket for "obstructed view" because of a vinyl sticker I had on my completely blacked-out rear windshield. The blacked-out part is perfectly legal so long as you have two sideview mirrors, but the sticker? That might obstruct my view out of the window I can't see out of...

I feel your pain. The "obstruction" in my case was affixed to the back of the mirror and stuck out FAR less than the EasyPass that so many people slap on their windshields.

What you choose to do on your bike is between you and the pavement, don't go encouraging others to 1) break the law 2) risk a blowout on the debris resulting damage to bike, body and possibly death.

Mili Congratz and welcome to the ever-growing family of bikers. I have a 2003 Harley Fat Boy and love it! Couple of pieces of advice:

1. Get an armored motorcycle jacket. Mine saved me a lot of pain and road rash when I had my accident. Worth every penny.
2. Wear your helmet always. When I had my accident I hit my head just hard enough to actually change my vision.
3. Don't forget about your rear brake when stopping. I did when I tried to do a sudden stop. 850 pounds of Harley threw me off and I sheared the head of my femur off. Not fun, lot's of pain and totally avoidable if I had used my rear brake. That Ninja will flip on you if you don't and cause a lot more damage.
4. Have fun. Riding a motorcycle is just about the most legal fun a guy can have. A total nirvana-like experience when I get on mine.

The bike in the backround of the pic is my step-dad's Harley '08 Night Train. I have to wait a month before I can ride mine. I get my license June 2, then the next motorcycle saftey class isn't 'til June 16th.

You paid $1700 for a bike that's as old as you are. Bikes change every 4 years or so and thus there would be 4 or 5 revolutions of this bike out there now. For $2000 you could have got a new ninja 250 that probably has about the same power, better handling, and better breaks, not to mention you will be the one that gets to break it in and abuse it if you want, not let someone else abuse it.

Nice milli.Im working on getting myself a bike as well.Lucky for me my bosses friend sells and restores bikes for a hobby and has two barns full of bikes and bike parts .I think im going to be going for a cruiser of some sort more then likely a honda shadow 750.Sweet thing is ill probbly get one for about 4-600 in perfect running condition Hopeing for a 2003 or better but well see.Gl with your lisence.

Third, the handling is all about the person riding it, way more then the bike itself.

Fourth, I would NEVER pay 2 grand for a 250cc engine...no matter how good the bike is. 250cc is like a tiny pocket rocket compared to a 500.

You can easily tell if someone abused a bike or not. This guy knew how to take care of a bike. He worked for Cessna (sp?). He changed all the aftermarket things himself. So it wasn't abused.

So, actually, we kinda screwed him. He knew he put the price really low, he just wanted to get rid of it asap 'cause he was moving.

I'm not much of a cruiser type, way too heavy and slow.

I like bikes that are geared for racing. I'm actually thinking about getting into motorcycle racing, but unfortuneately, we don't really have much of that around here.

Apparently I know a lot more about bikes than you. I couldn't find stats for a 91, apparently it's to old to be recorded, but the 94 500 made low 50's in hp. the 2008 ninja 250 is in the mid 30's in hp. 20 hp isn't going to make a difference when you don't know what you are doing. and I'm glad you can look at a bike and tell if it's been redlined to hell constantly, oil not changed on a regular basis, valves and chain maintained on a proper schedule.

Anytime you feel comfortable with your big bad 500, come to Hallett race track (www.hallettracing.net) , they have cycle track days once a month at least. I'll rent a 250 and do circles around ya. I have a 2007 cbr600rr for track days and a 2008 crb1krr for the street normally, but I promise I could beat ya in lap times on a 250. But I don't know about bikes because, like looking at bikes and knowing if they are abused or not, you can apparently look through the internet and see my garage.

Sell the bike and do something constructive with the money, I suggest tutors, or if you can't find one that's willing to deal with retards, see if your county will let you retake 1-12 grades for the donation.

There wouldn't be revolutions of motorcycles if they all stayed the same each and every year. Ergonomics are different each revolution, engine is typically different either at the computer level or the engine level or both, suspension is different every revolution. Do you know what a Steering Damper is? how it works? does you bike have one? if so is it mechanical or electric?

Kid, I'm not trying to be mean or say your bike is horrible, I'm just saying you could have got a better deal for the same amount of money. An older bike is going to cost more to maintain. The only good part about an old bike to start on? When you wreck it by the end of summer, it won't be missed. I suggest you get full leathers, a good helm, gloves and boots. Take your MSF and they will tell you the same thing? Oh, you do know what the MSF is right? http://msf-usa.org/ they teach kids how to ride their toys. Even tell them about some of the laws in the area. I would suggest take the basic course and either at the end of riding season where your at, or next year go back and take the advanced course. They even typically teach you on 250's that are donated for the most part to keep people alive.

and your 500 is a tiny pocket bike compared to my 1k rr. Who cares? It's not about pulling a ruler out and measuring ... whatever. it's keeping a new rider safe and hopefully you will fall in love with a sport that's extremely exciting.

Very nice, I recently bought a VTR 250 and got myself a licence. Bikes are way too much fun, the best part is riding down the service lane at the dismay of drivers stuck in traffic on the highway(This is illegal but how many police are going to chase you??).

But be careful man, It has been statistically proven that sport bikes; have far more Motorcycle Accidents, (and Sadly fatalities) than cruisers.

In fact; so much so, that the Navy and Marine Corps have instituted a Sport Bike Training course for ALL Sport Bike owers.

So Take care. They can be alot of fun; but they will bite you in a second! Be safe.

Also just a bit of advice... be very attentive when riding... people in cars don't pay attention to bikes. It is even worse now with rampant cell phone use
...

Not counting the helmet lecture, the second thing the guy that taught me to ride taught me was to ride like you are invisible. IOW, always assume no one can see you, and adjust yourself accoringly - it's guaranteed that sooner or later someone won't, and this way you'll already be on to them.


First lesson was how to stop the bike. Gotta love good friends.
