help with gamepads

i purchased a gamepad for my pc, like a ps2 controller. my question is, how do i get it to work with the game?
the help section says to go to the key mapping section of the options menu. this is where i get stuck because i have no idea what to do in the key mapping section. could someone help me please?

i have a nostromo game pad which is a little differant, but i had to find the pre programmed keys on the pad and reprogram the keys on my board to match..then the keys on the pad worked fine. This is just a thought....
