    Default Ranged Ranger feats

For a ranged ranger i dont see a ton of great feats unless im missing something. I have Point blank shot and weapon focus: ranged but not sure what to get for level 6. If i get mental toughness, can i go arcane archer as pure ranger? if i go sniper theres even less to choose.

Well rangers get a lot of free ranged feats:

lvl 2: Bow Strength, Rapid Shot
    lvl 6: Manyshot
lvl 11: precise shot, improved precise shot

So really all the ranged feats except for a few are free. So really it's a matter of just picking up whatever else you want. As for other feats you could take. If you are a bow build, high dex, then maybe take weapon finese for when the mobs get in close.

Do rangers actually get Precise shot? They get Impr precise Shot without prereqs.

This is something Ive wondered about for quests like Let Sleeping Dust Lie.

Edit: NM, new compendium says they do.

Anyway, assuming they do consider the lvl 6 feat for something other than ranged, a Rgr's real str is being able to range AND do other things. A pure Ftr can be a better Archer.

However, make sure ya get Impr Crit at lvl 9.

Improved Crit Ranged, Power Crit Ranged could help do some major damage (esp w/ manyshot). Shot on the run is nice if you move around a lot.

Had to log in and check, but yes, rangers get precise shot for free at lvl 11.

Improved crit at lvl 9 is a must.

A fighter 10/ranger 6 would be the best archer. EDIT: Rethinking this actualy. I might say that a ranger 12/fighter 4 might be a better archer build since the higher ranger levels should open up Deepwood Sniper II when (if) it's added into the game. I'd hate to miss out on it if it's something good.

Improved Critical: Ranged is a must.

Power Critical is not worth the feat since it doesn't add into base damage like a seeker item does.

Shot on the run is nice, but it is pretty feat heavy to get. (4?) And a -4 to hit while moving around isn't all that bad at lvl 16.

You may know this already, but wanted to mention that IPS now has a toggle to turn it off (at which point it works like Precise Shot). Very useful in Let Sleeping Dust Lie as you said.

Yeah, I know Impr is toggleable, and after posting I checked the compendium, and it says they get precise shot also. Wasn't sure cause I don't actually have a lvl 11 rgr. And the old description was vague.

I do have an Archer Ftr build with Impr precise shot and precise shot. I've had good luck with him in Ghola Fan by targeting the baddie first, then opening fire. Guaranteed to only hit my intended target.

yea i plan to get improved crit, but only 6 now. I have a 17 base str, but since i get more dex stats as a elf and ranger should i take finesse anyway and dump the stat points into dex? or not bother with finesse and put them into str.

Well I suppose it depends on which is going to be higher, and by how much, when your at the lvl cap.

    What is your base strength?

    What is your base dexterity?

    Have you eaten any tomes?

Where did you put your stat increase at lvl 4?

    17 str + 1 tome = 18
    17 Dex + 1 tome + level 4 + 3 from enhancements = 22 dex

since im an elf ranger ill also get 2 more dex from enhancments, but i was thinking str since damage is based on that anyway even with finesse isnt it?

    Strength: Base 17 +1 tome +6 item = 24

    Dexterity: Base 17 +1 tome +6 item +4 lvls +4 enhancements = 32

I might go with something like this or drop +2 from lvls on dexterity and put them into strength so you end with a:

    Str: 26 (+8 to hit/dmg)
    Dex: 30 (+10 to hit)

I might skip weapon finese here since it would only add +2 to your hit with melee, which it seems like you want to go mostly all ranged so not a big deal. But it could go either way.

i think ill go with the second one, that way i can balance out my to hit and damage with melee and with a nice range of favored ill get +2 hit with that.

Does improved crit stack with keen? i found a keen longbow of punturing but at 19-20 its still hard to make it effective

Nope, they do not stack. Best bet with a bow is the Silver Bow. It has a base crit range of 19-20, so with imp. crit: ranged it's 17-20.

Rapid shot I believe now works, maybe always did, with repeaters.
