    Question New Installation and Vista

So a few weeks ago my old system decided to fry itself from the inside out
I went out and ordered a brand new system and its finally come in

I got everything setup downloaded the client again with the high res texture downloader from the last turbine email
I installed it first to the program files folder patched the 22 files and restarted like requested
"You cannot run this application with administrative priviledges. Please try again without running as administrator."
I never set the files to run as an admin double checked all the files and the box just isn't checked for that.
So I read that uninstalling and reinstalling it in another folder besides the program files folder
So I did just that its now in c:\dungeons & dragons online\ so I double check that the user account have full permissions for the folder
did the first set of patching again thankfully its only 22 files
Reboot as requests and low and behold
"You cannot run this application with administrative priviledges. Please try again without running as administrator."

Has there been a successful way to get around this yet?
And remember the latest changes were suppose to make this easier for those of us doing a fresh install under vista
seems like it has the opposite effect to me

Found the post about turning off user account control and that fixed it.

Is your vista user account an "Admin" account or a regular user account?

An easy way around those issues is to just disable UAC (User Access Control). UAC is just another security feature added to Vista. It is more annoying then useful, but I am sure there will be people that will tell me I am wrong.. gotta love the forums .

Under control panel go to User Accounts and Click on "Turn User Access Control on or off". Uncheck the box, reboot and all should be good.

If you have the windows firewall up still you will still need to add DNDclient.exe and DNDlauncher.exe to the firewall expcetions list.

    Good Luck

I have had UAC disabled for quite awhile. I have this issue with running as an administrator, but I do not have an option to disable that on the executable files. Probably because I am logged in with an admin account. Based on this logic, I am supposed to login as a normal user whenever I want to play this game?

Vista is designed to be operated mainly from a Standard User account. Logged in to an administrator account with UAC off actually opens you to quite a few potential threats.

Yes it does expose you to those things unless you take the steps to protect yourself like any good xp user would have.
Its a case of do I need that extra protection vs the ease of getting into the game.

    That's correct.

They're not going to endorse killing the UAC and/or running as an Admin. Heck, in all of my messages where I post that as a suggestion, I always try to mention that you should only do so if you know how to properly monitor your system and at your own risk.

I think one of the greatest "problems" with Vista with respect to home users is that all the security and account control is enabled from the start and it is set too high. I can tell that a good deal of this was done to prevent malware and/or to prevent the machine from being turned into a zombie or relay.

A user *can* protect themselves...it's just a matter of taking the steps to do so:

    1. Have a good port monitor (free).
    2. Have a good process monitor (free).
    3. Have a good third-party registry editor (free).
    4. Use internet software that has good control over activation of any executable code. For instance, I run Mozilla for web, Forte' Agent for newsgroups and Eudora for e-mail.
    5. Know your way around the registry and and know how to monitor/use the local services.

It takes relatively minimal effort to keep the machine virus/spyware/malware/bot free. Yes, something can get on your machine and run itself under the Admin account....and if the code is particularly malicious, it could be bad. But then again, how many malicious programs actually eat the machine. That doesn't happen too often any more (not that what they do is desirable but you *can* deal with it).

Again, (for anyone else reading this), only kill your UAC and other security settings in Vista if you know what you are doing with respect to protecting your machine.
