Default Monk Whirlwind Attack Animation Feedback

Nice video at Ten Ton Hammer on the monk. Nice job Kate. I love the way she says "bhaad ahhsss".

One thing I don't like is the look of the whirlwind attack animation. It's like a spinning top with the monk's foot pointed upward. It would look much better if they used an altered version of the heel kick animation that they already have in place. A jumping version of that as a 360 degree spin that hits with the heel. More powerful, more impressive, more aesthetically pleasing. The current version looks a little goofy.

Final request: when you make the character creation video for the monk, please make a high res version available on the web. (I'm talking about the class videos you can see during character creation.) All in-game video for DDO runs very choppy on my machine, ever since mod 4 or 5. I can run the intro video with Bink Video fine, but running it through the DDO client is choppy and unwatchable.

    Thanks!

She didn't seem to know where the mobs were in the Desert. That's sorta worrisome...

There are players higher level than I that I have to give a guided tour to when we go in the desert. Me, I love the area and am there between quests most times. She did know enough to say "Lets not go into the undead area" and turn around for the gnolls. She was also smart to not run further into the gnoll city and get sniped with her melee character. I think she knows it pretty well all things considered. I thought the way she was having camera issues, etc. is that the notebook she had was not her usual gaming rig. Kind of choppy movements, etc.

The whirlwind attack was not as super cool as the rest of the attacks. I thought perhaps they would do like a iron broom (large sweep like movement) or a spinning standing kick/punch or something. The rest of the animations look so much more thought out. But it still rocks!

Well, to be fair- she did know she was running into the Undead area.
Personally, I thought the animations we saw were fantastic. Much better than I was expecting, actually.

And, splashing in some old school Oriental Adventures was an inspired direction. Kudos to whomever put that into the mix.

aye .. I would presume that she didn't have a helm of freewill or a reavers ring and thought it would be bad PR to have her little monk get despaired and slaughtered on camera

I like the animations so far, but I hope they're not finished. It just seems that when the monk does a flip, his body is "stuck" in the air while he does the animation, not very ... well not very realistic

    No, I got it.

My point is, if we have Fighters lugging around up to 5 tons of gear (and Barbarians going higher than that), what's so bad about some wire-fu?

Well, I got the sense she's not immersed in the game, the way some of us might be. She seems proficient though. And, she took her laptop on the road, and got the word out. That counts for something, in my book.

I hate when people say "Ki" when they're referring to Chinese martial arts and mean "Chi"

Ki is the similar internal energy as called in JAPANESE martial arts like aiKIdo, and Judo, and Karate.

Chinese Martial arts (and Martial Arts practicing monks are pretty much strictly Chinese, certianly not Japanese) refer to Chi, ie "Ch-EE"

If you've ever done Chinese martial arts, you probably share my pet peeve

Then it must really bug you that DDO is using "Qi" for the internal power of monks.

Could probably explain it somehow with the slow fall ability.

Same concept, different names. The concept also isn't exclusive to martial arts, and can be seen in yoga or in "inner power" scams/self improvements peddled by motivational speakers.

By the way China and Japan (or the far East, for that matter) aren't the only countries with martial artists, nor that "Monk" only applies to the chop-socky cliche any more than "Paladin" only means a mounted templar type, "Barbarian" means Conan knock-off, "Ranger" means guy who lives in the woods, or "Rogue" means thief.

One great character was a Greco-Roman wrestling Monk. Good times! Flopping goblins around like floudering fish is fun!

I did Kung Fu in college, but I don't really really care which one you use, Chi, Qi, or Ki. The concept was originally Indian anyways. The Japanese martial arts were the first to gain mass popularity in America, so the Japanese words have gained a little more traction. The ninja movies in the 80s I think also contributed to that.

I'm kind of meh about the whirlwind animation, but I really like some of the initial animations. The look just like some of the moves I learned. Of course I never did any backflips with my kicks. My teacher always told me to never aim a kick higher than the crotch.

I was looking foward to seeing how she was going to solo the desert like she said, especially the mummies and the air elementals. Even with the saves of a monk, those things can be murder on a melee character.

Chi = Qi depends on if it is mandarin or cantonese. From what my Kung Fu teacher (s) once told me, there is no real official pinyin spelling of cantonese, so they change constantly. Hence why sometimes you will see systems spelled differently by different teachers. Wing Chun, Ving Chun, Bei Mei, Pak Mei, etc. because that is how they translate the sound of the word.

EDIT: Also, Tai Chi is actually Taiji. Baqua is Paqua, etc.

Looked like the stupid animation stolen from the Street Fighter series ... Ryu and Kens whirlwind attack. Anybody else think that this was a cheesy rip-off?
