    Default Vista Problems?

I recently purchased a new computer. I'm really happy with it. It's alot faster than my old computer. I now have 3 gigs of ram and a quad core processor. It does have an average video card (ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT), but it's equal to my old one (ATI VisionTek X1550). My fps is about 5-10 fps better than before. I know niether of them are the best video cards, but they do the job.

    My question is:

My game experience is very "jerky". I have no loss% and I still zone in before everyone else. My Loading times are pretty quick, usually within 5 seconds or so. My loading times seem to be 1/2 as long or less than they were with my old computer.

I'm assuming this is due to Vista. But I'm obviously not 100% sure.

My old computer is slower but seems to run the game alot smoother except for the loading times.

    Any suggestions or ideas?

More or less you can view this as a guide to video card effectiveness.

Personally, while I'm sure it's possible to tweak the system for better performance - with only 3GB of RAM, going with 32bit XP would give you a noticeable performance improvement.

    uhhhhh...... huh?

That link tells me that my old card and my new card are ranked in the same category.

BTW, While run ddo, I'm only using 65% of my ram, according to the ram monitor I have.

If my video card is basically the same as the old card and my computer now has more ram and a much better processor, then would it be the video card?

What exactly do you mean jerky? Can you describe it more?

Like every 1/2 to 1 second, I get a mini lag spike. Sometimes the game apears to go back 1-2 seconds.

    Example:

When I'm running somewhere, I may pass an object and 1 second later pass the same object. That is the extreme end however. But that does happen several times while I'm logged on.

Most of the time it seems that the game freezes for a fraction of a second. It wouldnt be noticible if it happened every few minutes, but this happens the entire time I'm logged on. And it happens every 1/2 to 1 second.

I've been playing this game for over two years and I know what typical lag is, but this particular problem has only happened since I started playing on this new pc.

That'd be precisely one of the points I intended to make- you shot pretty low on the chart. Yeah, I understand budgets.

If I'm remembering correctly, there are some differences between the ATI & nVidea cards - I believe ATI (and your cards specifically) tend to be more dependent on system performance than some others...aka, your additional FPS is really due to your CPU/RAM upgrade.

On Vista however, there's a long story. An identical system running XP Pro is highly likely to run faster than one running Vista.

Thanks Riorik, that link was actually pretty useful. That would've been great if my system came with a much better video card than it did, but this is the one it came with.

From what your saying, it would appear that the issue really is Vista. Thats what I was worried about.

So if the problem is Vista, is there anything I can do to "adjust" or fix my problem?

One thing you need to do on vista, is religiously check for driver updates (and make sure you got sp1) - your video drivers are several months old.

After updating my video driver, I'm still having the same problem. I did not see any noticible difference at all. It almost seems as tho my PC and the DDO server are just not in sync. It's like my PC is trying to go faster than the DDO server will allow.

I did however pay more attention to when my problems occur. My problems seem to be constant in public areas. In quests, the problem appears to ease a bit, but the problem remains especially in the shroud.

I ran AtDQ. While inside, I was running about 85 fps on medium settings w/o post processing effects. In the shroud on the same settings I was running 7 fps. In most public areas, I am running 30-40 fps. I tried lowering my settings and the fps was about the same. When I raised my settings to high I noticed about a 5-10% decrease in fps. On ultra high there was a big decrease.

I don't mind running on the low setting for performance. I've been experimenting with the different quality levels, And there really isn't much difference between Low/Medium/High w/o post processing for me anyway. But the "jerky" performance is driving me crazy!!!! I really can't stand it. I'm missing jumps and have died a several times due to this problem.

So even tho my fps at times are good, the main problem still remains. I definately did not have this problem with my older, slower pc. I've had this problem ever since I got this pc, which has been 2 weeks now.

I recently upgrade to Vista as well. I keep having a similar experience. I keep getting jerky lag about every 1 second or so, and sometimes I lag for up to a minute or more before I catch back up to the game. I when this happens my bits received sky rockets to 1K or higher, and when the bits received lowers back to a couple hundred the lag goes away.

Is there some setting I can use to limit the amount of bits I receive?

This is just empyrical observation from having played on a couple of Vista machines now after running XP boxes the last couple of years:

When I log out and in again more than a couple of times (i.e. checking all my character's mail, mailing items between them) I start to get more and more of the lag behavior you're describing. It get's so bad in some quests it gets to be like a slide show.

I've played with settings, network connections, router settings and ports but I think the issue seems to come down to some sort of graphic memory leak in Vista or DirectX associated with the character load/unload routines. I find the jerky behavior is minimized if I exit the game entirely and restart the client rather than logging out and back in from the character load screen. It takes longer but it is far less annoying in the long run.

I'm keeping an eye out for driver updates and Vista patches too...

I've been experiencing the same problems described since mod 6 came out. I run WinXP Pro, w/ all the lastest updates (I have auto update on). I'v been playing now for over a year, w/ the same hardware, same service provider, etc.. In another thread a DDO Cust Svc person said to run tracert. Well it showed what the little green connection icon showed, good ping times. I might go a couple, three minutes w/o a problem, I might literally rubber band past the same spot 3 or 4 times in a row. A severe spike I had once, I sat down at a rest shrine and rubber banded back outside the closed door, to the awaiting mobs I just "ditched" while I healed. It wasn't pretty cause my ghost couldn't get back in the closed door to rez.

So, the mystery is: If DDO says they haven't changed anything, and I haven't changed anything, why are so many people I party w/, as well as threads like this, show lag spikes and rubber banding is far more common than ever?

Something has certianly changed somewhere, and there's nothing more frustrating than watching a mob slowly kill you while you can't hit him. All you can do is standing there trying to jump away looking like your feet are embedded in concrete. On a good note, while only getting encapped during a quest, I managed to stabalize each time and make a come back w/ the new regen feature.

Good luck, happy hunting, and let's track down this bug that effects XP (not just mine), Vista.
Of course I can be in here, the door was clearly unlocked, and yes, I always dress in black and put shoe polish on my face.

    Still having the same problems.

I have updated every driver I can think of. I've installed SP1.

I guess I'll just have to live with this poor game quality.
