Combined supreme shard Q.

So, if you do pos/earth for the supreme shard combo, does that mean it will work on nothing but green steel items that have pos/earth for the first two bonuses? Or is it possible to add the combined shard of pos/earth to something like....air/earth?
Or do we even know yet?(for sure)
